South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Beloit, WI - Ryan Cook turned in his best outing in nearly two months to lead the South Bend Silver Hawks to a 6-3 victory over the Beloit Snappers on Wednesday night at Pohlman Field. With the win, the Silver Hawks improve to 6-7 in the second half and 4-1 on the current 10 game road trip.

Cook (WP, 6-7) had not won a game since May 12th when he defeated the Lansing Lugnuts. He had lost seven straight starts since then and also spent some time on the disabled list with a blister in late May.

Not only did Cook get the win on Wednesday night, he also tied the team high for 2009 with eight strikeouts - a season record set by Trevor Harden on opening night at West Michigan. The right hander allowed six hits in his 7.0 innings on the mound, walking just one.

The Silver Hawks scored a run in the top of the first against Beloit starter Bobby Lanigan (LP, 7-5), but had to feel like they could have scored more. With runners at the corners and one out, Marc Krauss laced a single to left to plate Victor Estevez for the 1-0 lead. The Hawks continued to load the bases with one out, but left them loaded as Lanigan got two groundouts to end the threat.

Perhaps frustrated by leaving them loaded in the first, the Silver Hawks came right back in the second and plated five more runs against Lanigan. With five hits and two errors committed in the inning, South Bend sent nine batters to the plate. Nelson Gomez had a RBI double and Reynaldo Navarro had a RBI single, with the other runs scoring on defensive miscues by the Snappers to put South Bend in front 6-0.

After five great innings from Cook, the Snappers finally figured him out to the tune of three runs in the sixth inning. Aaron Hicks had a RBI double with Ramon Santana adding a two run single to cut the lead in half at 6-3.

Bayron Zepeda (ND) tossed a scoreless eighth with Justin Mace (SV, 4) pitching around a walk and a hit in the ninth to earn his fourth save.

The three game series continues with game two Thursday night at 8:00 PM Eastern Time. RHP Jordan Meaker (2-0, 7.71 ERA) will make his first appearance as a starter for South Bend, while Beloit sends RHP Liam Hendriks to the mound in his Midwest League debut. Pregame coverage begins at 7:40 PM on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
