Helton: Pitched 5.0 shutout innings in 4/14 Win vs. LEX, allowing one hit w/ 5 K & 1 BB (5-0 Power)
LEADING OFF: West Virginia outlasted Kannapolis 8-7 in 16 innings on Monday. Ke'Bryan Hayes went 4-6 with his first professional home run and drove in five to lead the Power. West Virginia led 5-1 in to eighth, but Kannapolis got within one on a bases loaded triple and tied the game on a wild pitch. The Intimidators took a 7-5 lead in the top of the tenth and Hayes singled in two to extend the game. In the 16th inning, Mitchell Tolman doubled in Christian Kelley for the second walk-off win of the year. Logan Ratledge earned the win and Jaider Rocha took the loss in a gam that lasted five hours and one minute.
MARATHON MEN: Monday's game was the longest in the history of Appalachian Power Park. No game had lasted longer than 15 innings since the stadium opened in 2005. The longest game time-wise prior to Monday's five hour and one minute game was four hours and 57 minutes on July 22, 2010 against Savannah. The longest game in Power history was a 19 inning contest in 2011 at Greensboro that lasted five hours and nine minutes.
SEVEN STRAIGHT: West Virginia has won seven straight and is riding the club's longest winning stretch since the 2013 season. The Power had not won more than five games in a row since an eight game streak from July 17 through 26, 2013. The longest winning streak last season was just five games. West Virginia's current winning streak is the longest in baseball right now, Majors or Minors, and the team's 10-2 start is tied for the best winning percentage regardless of level (with the Salt Lakes Bees in the Pacific Coast League).
ARMS RACE: Logan Ratledge made his pitching debut on Monday, earning the win with a scoreless inning of work. The infielder had not pitched at any level prior to Monday. Ratledge is the first position player to pitch for West Virginia in nearly two years. Adam Landecker was the last to do so, pitching on July 1, 2014 against the Hickory Crawdads.
HAYES YA! Ke'Bryan Hayes hit his first pro home run and went 4-6 Monday, driving in five of the Power's eight runs. Hayes and Mitchell Tolman had four hits apiece, becoming the first West Virginia players with four hit games this season. Hayes is the first Power player to Drive in five since Jerrick Suiter plated five runs on July 12, 2015 at Greensboro.
DIVISION RIVAL? The Power host Northern Division foe Kannapolis through Wednesday. West Virginia and Kannapolis played 15 times last season, but only see each other for seven games this year; this three-game set and then again in August for a four-game series at Intimidators Stadium. West Virginia leads the all-time series 64-59.
CATCH YOU LATER (THIS WEEK): West Virginia and Lexington will meet again this coming weekend for a four game series at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. The Power and Legends meet for 16 more games against each other this season. West Virginia holds a 118-99 record in the all-time series, including a 62-47 mark in Lexington since 2005.
NINE TO A DIME: Tito Polo has hit safely in each game he has played this season. The outfielder is batting .348 with 16 hits over 46 at bats over ten games. Polo's longest hitting streak in 2015 was seven games. Francisco Diaz had the longest hitting streak by any Power player last season, reaching by way of a base hit in 14 straight to end the season.
POWER POINTS: The next former Power player to reach the Majors will be the 50th to do so in franchise history... Alfredo Reyes hitting streak is now at six games and the shortstop is batting .318 since April 12.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh was idle and plays in San Diego tonight at 10:10 pm... Indianapolis doubled up Toledo 4-2. Josh Bell drove in a pair for the Indians... Altoona pounded Harrisburg 12-5... Reese McGuire, Chris Diaz and Erich Weiss each hit home runs in the win... Bradenton beat Lakeland 4-2.
PROMO UPDATE: West Virginia closes out its opening homestand with a 10:35 A.M. Grand Slam School Day on April 20 against the Kannapolis Intimidators. Gates will open at 9:30 A.M. The Power will also host Rome in a school day contest on April 27.
