April 19, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Hickory, NC - The Greenville Drive offense continued its rampage against opposing pitchers on Tuesday night, swatting four home runs and collecting 19 hits in a 16-4 takedown of the Hickory Crawdads. The Drive have now won five straight games and clinched a series victory over Hickory.
All nine Drive (9-4) starters collected at least one hit, with Luis Alexander Basabe leading the way by going 4-6 with a home run. Tate Matheny and Joseph Monge each picked up three hits, with Monge smacking his first homer of the season, and Michael Chavis, Chad De La Guerra and Austin Rei added two hits apiece. Chavis homered for the third straight game, while Rei hit his first homer and drove in five runs.
Monge's two-run homer in the second inning gave the Drive a 2-1 lead, and after the Crawdads (9-4) tied things at two in the bottom half, the Drive scored twice more in the third and never trailed again. Matheny's double to right field gave the Drive the lead, and he later scored on a balk by Hickory starter Brett Martin (1-1).
A five-run fifth saw the Drive continue to hit the ball all over the yard. Chavis's solo homer with one out got the inning started. Later in the frame, Rei hit a two-run triple, and Kyri Washington smacked his team-leading fourth homer of the year to drive home two more.
The sixth inning was highlighted by an RBI single by Matheny and a two-run single by Basabe to extend the lead to 12-2. Basabe's solo homer in the eighth provided even more insurance, and Rei delivered a three-run homer in the ninth to cap the carnage.
The offense overshadowed a solid start from Drive hurler Logan Boyd (2-1), who shut down the Crawdads over his final four innings and finished the night by scattering eight hits over six innings with three strikeouts. Jeffry Fernandez notched the save by hurling the final three innings and giving up only one earned run.
Hickory picked up 12 hits of their own in a losing effort on Tuesday night, with Andy Ibanez and Eduard Pinto leading the way with three hits.
The teams will conclude their series with a 10:30 AM game in Hickory on Wednesday morning. The Drive will send RH Roniel Raudes (2-0, 0.90) to the mound looking for a three-game sweep, and the projected starter for the Crawdads is RH Pedro Payano (0-1, 0.90).
