Lexington Legends News Release
D.J. Burt had four hits and five runs batted in, and the Lexington Legends used two five-run outbursts to take an 11-9 win over the Asheville Tourists Tuesday night.
The Tourists took the early lead on a two-run homer by Brandon Rodgers in the bottom of the first inning, but the Legends moved in front with a five-run fifth.
Josh Banuelos and Cody Jones started the top of the fifth with singles. Jeckson Flores bunted for a hit, and when pitcher Jack Wynkoop committed a throwing error, Banuelos scored, Jones went to third and Flores to second. Burt's single scored two runs, putting the Legends ahead 3-2. Wynkoop committed another throwing error after fielding Marten Gasparini's sacrifice bunt, allowing Burt to reach third and
Gasparini second. Burt scored as Samir Duenez grounded out, and Gasparini came home on a sacrifice fly by Chase Vallot.
The Tourists got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Brian Mundell singled, moved to second on a passed ball, to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Jonathan Piron. Terry McClure reached first on an error by Gasparini, the shortstop, and came around to score on a triple by Max George, cutting the Legends' lead to one at 5-4.
Asheville tied the score with a run in the bottom of the sixth, and took a 7-5 lead on a two-run double by Carlos Herrera in the bottom of the seventh.
But the Legends responded with another five-run inning in the eighth. Anderson Miller bunted for a hit, and Banuelos followed with a two-run homer to tie the game. A single by Jones and a triple by Flores gave the Legends the lead at 8-7, and Burt made it 10-7 with a two-run homer to left field.
Rodgers hit his second home run of the game with a man on in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 10-9, but the Legends added a run in the top of the ninth when Banuelos reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jones and scored on a single by Burt.
Yunior Marte (2-0), who relieved Ray with two outs in the fifth inning, finished the game and got the win. Daniel Koger (0-1), who entered the game at the start of the eighth inning, was the losing pitcher.
The Legends have won the first two games of the series, which concludes Wednesday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
