Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

(Charleston, WV)- The West Virginia Power won the longest game in Appalachian Power Park history, beating the Kannapolis Intimidators 8-7 in 16 innings. The Power notched their seventh consecutive victory in a game that lasted just over five hours.

Kannapolis jumped to an early one-run lead with a Micker Adolpho RBI single in the second off Power starter Logan Sendelbach, but that was all they could muster against the right-hander. The Power starter sprinkled five hits and a run over five and a third innings. Sendelbach has not allowed more than two runs in any of his three starts this season.

The Power got on the board in the third when Carlos Munoz doubled in a pair of runs to give the Power their first lead 2-1.

In the fourth inning, after an Alfredo Reyes walk and Tito Polo single, Ke'Bryan Hayes launched the first home run of his professional career over the left field fence to expand the lead to 5-1. It was three of Hayes' career high five RBI, the first such game by a Power player since Jerick Suiter July 15th, 2015.

Riga lasted three and two thirds innings, allowing eight hits and five runs.

The Power maintained the four run lead until the eighth inning. After Eric Karch allowed three consecutive singles to load the bases, Seby Zavala hit a bases-clearing triple to cut the deficit 5-4. With Cody Daily batting, Karch threw a wild pitch, allowing Zavala to cross the plate and tie the game 5-5.

After a scoreless ninth, the Intimidators were able to break the tie in the tenth. After the first two Intimidators reached base, Antonio Rodriguez knocked in a run with a single. An error by Hayes allowed Kannapolis to score another run giving them a 7-5 advantage.

However the Power were not done. Tito Polo singled to leadoff the bottom of the inning off Kannapolis reliever Brandon Easterling. and Mitchell Tolman followed with a double. The next batter Hayes lined a single to right-center, scoring both runners and tying the game 7-7.

That would be the score all the way until the 16th inning, with both teams' bullpens trading zeroes in extra innings. Logan Ratledge (1-0), an infielder who had not pitched in either high school or college, threw a scoreless 15th to preserve the lead into the 16th.

With one out, Christian Kelly walked and Alfredo Reyes reached on an error. Mitchell Tolman smashed a double to right field off reliever Jaider Rocha (0-1), driving in the winning run and giving the Power the 8-7 victory.

Hayes went 4 for 6 with five RBI and Tolman finished 4 for 8 to pace the Power offense. All nine intimidator starters recorded a hit, with seven of the nine finishing with multiple hits.

The Power's seven game win streak is its longest since 2013.

Bret Helton starts game two of the series on Tuesday night, matched up against Zach Thompson. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. at Appalachian Power Park.
