Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Intimidators smashed a season-high three home runs, but West Virginia came roaring back late to defeat Kannapolis, 10-9, on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Power scored nine runs over their final three innings at bat, including five in the eighth inning to take the lead.
Tyler Sullivan finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored for Kannapolis while hitting his first professional home run (1) to lead off the sixth inning. Casey Schroeder chipped in with a solo home run (1) to open the eighth inning, his first hit of the season, to extend the Intimidators lead to 9-5.
In the bottom of the eighth, West Virginia rallied against Intimidators reliever Matt Ball for five runs. With the bases loaded and one out, Carlos Munoz grounded to shortstop Danny Mendick, who misplayed the chance, allowing two runs to score, cutting the Kannapolis lead, 9-7. Ryan Nagle, Tyler Fillibran, and John Bormann continued the rally by each driving in a run to put West Virginia ahead, 10-9.
Ball (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 1.0 inning of work. West Virginia's Jake Burnette (3-0) scored the win, limiting Kannapolis to a run on two hits over the final 3.0 innings.
Kannapolis built its early lead with a 6-run second inning, the highest-scoring frame for the Intimidators in 2016. Corey Zangari blasted his team-leading third home run (3) of the season to cap the big inning, a 2-run shot to put Kannapolis up 6-0.
Starting pitcher Zach Thompson did not factor into the decision, working 5.0 innings and limiting the Power to a run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Ryan Hinchley worked into and out of a bases-loaded, no outs jam in the sixth inning, escaping with only one run allowed in the frame. The Power chased Hinchley from the game in the seventh with three more runs to pull within three, 8-5
The Intimidators wrap up this 3-game series in West Virginia on Wednesday morning at 10:35 a.m. Kannapolis sends LHP Tanner Banks (2-0, 2.70 ERA) to the mound against West Virginia's RHP Dario Agrazal (1-0, 4.50 ERA). The team returns to Kannapolis on Thursday when the Intimidators open a 4-game series against Delmarva.
Thursday's game at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System is "Wear Your Favorite Jersey Night" where fans can purchase reserved tickets for only $5 by wearing a sports uniform to the ballpark.
