Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Kannapolis played the third-longest game in Intimidators history, lasting 5:01, before falling to the West Virginia Power, 8-7, in 16 innings at Appalachian Power Park. The game started Monday night and ended on the other side of midnight Tuesday morning when West Virginia's Mitchell Tolman singled to right field with two outs, scoring Christian Kelley to end the marathon.

West Virginia infielder Logan Ratledge (1-0) gave up a few long fly outs as well as a hit and a walk, but he kept Kannapolis off the board in the top of the 16th to earn the win. Kannapolis reliever Jaider Rocha (0-1) took the loss, giving up an unearned run in the 16th following an error at second base by Danny Mendick, his second of the game.

Brandon Easterling spun 4.0 scoreless, hitless innings of relief for the Intimidators, striking out five batters from the 11th through 14th innings while walking only two.

Kannapolis trailed 5-1 most of the game until rallying for four runs in the eighth. The Intimidators strung together four straight hits off West Virginia reliever Eric Karch to open the inning. After Tyler Sullivan, Grant Massey, and Corey Zangari all singled to load the bases, Seby Zavala cleared the bases with a 3-run triple. Zavala later scored the tying run on a wild pitch to even the contest, 5-5.

West Virginia overcame an early 1-0 deficit in the home half of the third inning when Carlos Munoz doubled to right field, scoring Ke'Bryan Hayes and Casey Hughston for a 2-1 Power lead. Hayes added to West Virginia's lead with a 3-run home run, the first of his career, in the bottom of the fourth, effectively ending the night for Kannapolis starting pitcher Ryan Riga.

In extra innings, the Intimidators jumped ahead with two runs in the 10th inning. With Zangari and Zavala on base, Antonio Rodriguez singled to score Zangari, and Zavala crossed the plate on an error for a 7-5 lead. The Power responded in the home half of the 10th on 2-run single by Hayes.

Riga took no decision, giving up five runs on eight hits in 3 and 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked three while plunking two batters.

Power starting pitcher Logan Sendelbach worked 5 and 1/3 innings, limiting Kannapolis to a run on five hits. Sendelbach struck out three batters before giving way to reliever Karch.

The Intimidators and Power needed more than five hours to complete the contest, only the third game in Intimidators history to surpass the 5-hour mark. On July 15, 2014, Kannapolis dropped a 7-5 game to Asheville in 15 innings that took 5:11. The previous long game came during the teams run to the 2005 South Atlantic League Championship. On September 7, 2005, the Intimidators needed 21 innings to defeat the Charleston RiverDogs in the first game of the SAL South Division Series, 4-3, in a game that lasted 5:09. That game is still the longest by innings in franchise history.

The Intimidators continue this 3-game series in West Virginia on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Kannapolis sends RHP Zach Thompson (0-1, 6.48 ERA) to the mound against West Virginia's RHP Bret Helton (0-0, 0.00 ERA). The team returns to Kannapolis on Thursday, April 21, when the Intimidators host Delmarva for a four-game series.
