Bowling Green, KY - Phil Wunderlich re-wrote the Hot Rods (16-18, 57-47) record books on Saturday night, driving home five runs to pace the Hot Rods to a 9-3 thrashing of the Dayton Dragons (23-11, 58-45). Wunderlich laced two doubles and drove home five runs, giving him the single-season RBI record of 71 with 36 games to go in the regular season. The victory snaps the Hot Rods three-game losing streak and moves them to a Midwest League-best 36-15 at home.

Wunderlich's first blow came in the bottom of the third inning after the Dragons built a 2-0 lead in the top half of the inning. Keith Castillo began the frame with a single, going to second on a one-out single from Cody Rogers. Two batters later, Wunderlich ripped a double down the right field line plating both Castillo and Rogers to tie the game at 2-2.

Over the next two innings, after Dayton made it 3-2 in the third, the Hot Rods answered back with solo runs to take a 4-3 lead. In the third, Nick Schwaner evened the game at 3-3 with a single to left field. IN the fourth, Derek Dietrich doubled, went to third on a groundout, and then scored on a wild pitch to put Bowling Green on top.

It stayed that way until the fifth inning when Wunderlich and Co. rattled off five more runs. The first three men - Schwaner, Castillo, Torres - all reached to begin the frame against reliever Pat Doyle. After Rogers struck out, Dietrich forced home the first run with a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 5-3. That's when Wunderlich struck again with a bases-clearing double to left-center field to bust the game open at 8-3. Wunderlich scored himself on a single and an error immediately following his double to pad the lead to 9-3.

From there, the Hot Rods bullpen did the job as Chris Rearick (W; 5-1) earned the win with three hitless innings of relief. Austin Hubbard closed down the final two frames without giving up a run while striking out two.

The story, however, belonged to Wunderlich. He added two more doubles to his team-best total of 25. Five RBI tied his career high for the second time this season. His 71 RBI surpassed the previous record of 68 set by Brett Nommensen, now in Class AA Montgomery, in 2010.
