South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - Mike Bolsinger didn't allow a hit until the eighth inning on Sunday afternoon, leading the South Bend Silver Hawks to a 3-1 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps at Coveleski Stadium.
Bolsinger (WP, 4-5) was in control from the start, retiring the first 11 batters in a row before walking James Robbins with two outs in the fourth. He then set down the next 10 in a row to go through the first seven innings in no-hit fashion.
Ryan Hamme led off the eighth and lined a ball to shallow center field. Hawks' outfielder Ender Inciarte came racing in and dove for the ball, but it glanced off his glove and fell for a single. Bolsinger regrouped to get the next three outs, finishing with 8.0 innings of one-hit ball, striking out six batters in picking up the win.
Kable Hogben (SV, 1) allowed two hits and a run in the ninth, but struck out Nick Castellanos to end the ball game and give South Bend their fourth win out of the last five games.
Offensively, the Silver Hawks struck early against West Michigan starter Victor Larez (LP, 1-2). Niko Gallego singled with one out in the first and moved to second when Matt Helm walked. Yazy Arbelo singled to load the bases and Gerson Montilla grabbed a RBI with a fielder's choice for the 1-0 lead. A Larez wild pitch scored Helm to push the lead to 2-0.
Gallego and Arbelo both played a part in the final run of the afternoon for the Silver Hawks in the third inning. Gallego led off with a double and one out later Arbelo had the RBI single to put South Bend up 3-0.
Ramon Castillo added two hits for South Bend, while Helm and Montilla had hitting streaks come to a close.
The Silver Hawks and Whitecaps wrap up the three game series on Monday evening with a 7:00 PM Eastern Time first pitch. RHP Jeff Shields (7-9, 4.70 ERA) and West Michigan's RHP Kevin Eichhorn (7-3, 3.68 ERA) will both seek their eighth win of the year in the starting roles. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
