Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Great Lakes Loons pounded three home runs as they defeated the TinCaps, 6-4, Sunday at Parkview Field. Rymer Liriano went 3-for-4 to raise his league-leading batting average to .325.
The loss means the TinCaps and Loons are tied in the Eastern Division standings as they vie for the final playoff spot with a month remaining.
Fort Wayne took the early lead with a two-out rally in the second inning. Mike Gallic and B.J. Guinn singled, then Chris Bisson and Rico Noel rapped RBI singles to make it 2-0.
The Loons plated an unearned run in the top of the third thanks to catcher's interference and an additional error, but the TinCaps got the run back in the bottom of the third when Connor Powers lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Liriano.
Great Lakes again scored an unearned run in the fifth inning to make it a 3-2 game. They tied it in the sixth when Jesse Bosnick hit a solo homer to right.
Jon Garcia's two-run blast in the top of the eighth gave the Loons their first lead of the day at 5- 3. The TinCaps chipped into the deficit in the bottom of the eighth; with Powers at second, Emmanuel Quiles smacked a sharp grounder off the leg of RHP Bret Montgomery. Quiles sprinted to first just ahead of Montgomery's wild throw, which went past the first baseman allowing Powers to score.
The Loons tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Bryant Hernandez drilled a leadoff home run to put Great Lakes ahead, 6-4. It snapped a 2-for-35 skid for Hernandez.
Montgomery (5-1) grabbed the win while RHP Robert Lara (0-1) took the loss. Loons RHP Scott McGough received his second save of the year.
The TinCaps fell to 19-16 in the half, 49-55 for the season. Great Lakes snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 19-16 since the all-star break, 58-46 on the year.
The TinCaps and Loons (Class-A Los Angeles Dodgers) finish the three-game series Monday at 7:05 p.m. at Parkview Field TinCaps LHP Todd Privett (1-1) takes to the mound against Loons RHP Zach Lee (6-3).
