Beloit pounds out 15 hits in 10-5 win over Kernels

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Beloit Snappers scored early and pounded the Kernels 10-5 at Perfect Game Field on Saturday evening. Randal Grichuk led the Kernels offense, going 4-5. The Snappers put a run on the board in the 1st inning, taking a 1-0 lead. Lance Ray singled with two outs, stole second base, and came home on a RBI double by Michael Gonzales.

Beloit added three more in the 2nd inning, extending their lead to 4-0. Daniel Ortiz led off the inning with a solo home run to right field. Reggie Williams and Tobias Streich followed with back to back singles. Williams scored on a RBI single by Wang Wei-Lin, and Streich scored on a RBI sacrifice fly to center by Daniel Santana.

The Kernels fought back with two runs in the 2nd inning. A RBI double by Justin Bass scored Randal Grichuk, making the score 4-1. Bass then scored on a RBI single by Jarrod Parks, cutting the Snappers lead to 4-2. Cedar Rapids put one more across in the 3rd inning. Rolando Gomez came home to score on a RBI groundout by Jeremy Cruz, cutting the Beloit lead to 4-3.

Beloit scored once in the 4th inning on a RBI sacrifice fly by Adam Bryant. Ortiz came home to score, giving the Snappers a 5-3 lead. Seth Fowler (0-2) made his first start of the season and took the loss in four innings of work. He allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out one and walking two.

Beloit scored three runs in the 6th inning. The first three Snappers reached base in the inning, and they all scored on a bases clearing double by Ray, extending Beloit's lead to 8-3. Tyler Kehrer pitched two innings for the Kernels, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out three and walking two.

B.J. Hermsen (11-7) started for Beloit and picked up the win, going six innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked one. The Snappers plated two more in the 7th inning, pushing their lead to 10-3. Jairo Perez and Williams scored when Bryant reached on a throwing error by Kernels shortstop Jean Almanzar.

The Kernels put two runs across in the 9th inning, cutting Beloit's lead to 10-5. Jean Almanzar singled to lead off the inning and scored on a fielding error by Beloit's Adam Bryant. Grichuk's RBI single brought home Gomez, cutting Beloit's lead to five. Blayne Weller went two innings for Beloit, allowing no runs on two hits. Ben Tootle pitched one inning, allowing one unearned run on two hits.

The Kernels continue the series with Beloit on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. The first 1,000 kids through the gates when they open at 1:00 pm receive a coupon for a free hot dog, popcorn and 12 oz. soda from the special stands on the concourse. The Kernels and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes present the second Faith Day of the season. Fans can bring a church bulletin or print the Faith Day flyer from the Kernels website to get club and plaza tickets at the group rate. The game will include a testimonial on the field prior to the game and there will be 'Resources that Build Your Faith' booths on the concourse, featuring local groups and organizations. It's also a 104.5 KDAT Sunday Family Day, featuring Travel Advisors Baseball Vacation Bingo, Papa Balloon and face painting by Funny Face Designs by Lori, storybook princess Ariel (presented by GSE), and running the bases and playing catch in the outfield, thanks to Wickwire Chiropractic and Wellness Center.
