Dayton Dragons News Release
Bowling Green, Ky.-Three Bowling Green pitchers combined to shutout the Dayton Dragons over the first eight innings and then stop a Dragons comeback bid in the ninth as the Hot Rods topped Dayton 3-1 on Sunday evening. The loss was the third straight for the Dragons (23-12, 58-47) and dropped them into a first place tie with Lansing in the Midwest League Eastern Division.
Bowling Green's Julio Cedeno drilled a solo home run in the second inning, his fifth homer of the year, to start the scoring, and the Hot Rods added two more in the sixth against Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Corcino (9-5) to take a 3-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Bowling Green starting pitcher Wilking Rodriguez shutout the Dragons on four hits over the first four innings, and reliever Jimmy Patterson followed Rodriguez with four scoreless innings on only one hit.
The Dragons trailed 3-0 going to the ninth inning when Billy Hamilton doubled to the right field corner with one out and Ronald Torreyes reached on an error. Juan Duran singled to left to bring in Hamilton and make it 3-1 as the Dragons had runners at first and second with one out. But Donald Lutz struck out and David Vidal lined out to right to end the game.
Corcino worked six innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) with two walks and six strikeouts to suffer the loss.
The Dragons finished with seven hits. Hamilton and Vidal each had two.
The game marked the midpoint of the second half race as the teams completed their 35th game of the 70-game half. Dayton's playoff cushion in the divisional race was trimmed to four games. The top two teams in the division will reach the playoffs with Lansing and Bowling Green out of the running as first-half qualifiers.
The Dragons and Hot Rods meet in the finale of the three-game series in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Monday at 7:35 p.m. (EDT) (WONE 980 AM) as Bowling Green goes for a sweep. Josh Smith (9-5, 2.82) will start for Dayton. The next home game is Tuesday, August 2 against West Michigan at 7:00 p.m.
Notes: Dragons outfielder Yorman Rodriguez left the game in the third inning after aggravating a left shoulder injury that caused him to miss two weeks. Rodriguez had returned from the disabled list on Friday and was making his second start since his return.
