WORCESTER, M.A. - In a game that featured six home runs, the Syracuse Mets (18-34) beat the Worcester Red Sox (26-28) on Sunday afternoon, a 6-4 final score at Polar Park.
The WooSox jumped on top early in front of a crowd of 7,542, putting two on with two out in the bottom of the first inning. That brought the hot-hitting Ronaldo Hernandez to the plate, who muscled an 0-2 pitch to shallow right for an RBI single. That put runners on first and third, and the WooSox put Hernandez in motion, allowing Stewart to cross the plate on a steal of home before Hernandez was tagged out.
The 2-0 lead held until the fourth, when Syracuse's Travis Blankenhorn found the front row of the Worcester Wall on a solo homer to make it 2-1.
An inning later, the long ball reared its head again for the Mets, as Khalil Lee smashed a go-ahead two-run shot to right, a 468-foot home run off Kutter Crawford. Lee finished the week with three homers, all to the same part of the ballpark.
Crawford entered in the second after a scoreless frame from Michael Feliz as the opener, posting the following line: 3.1 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 4 K, 0 BB.
Connor Wong answered immediately for the WooSox in the bottom of the fifth, lifting a home run to the berm in left to tie the game. Wong, who homered yesterday, now has eight extra-base-hits since May 17.
But in the sixth, Daniel Johnson clobbered a two-run homer of his own to right, putting the road team up 5-3. Syracuse also tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on a Travis Blankenhorn solo blast to right.
Down 6-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, Jeter Downs led off the frame with a solo homer, a 374-foot swing that landed above the berm in left for his ninth of the year. The Mets then got the final two outs, sealing a series split in the second series of the season between the two teams.
The WooSox are off Monday and begin a road series Tuesday at 11:05 a.m. against the Buffalo Bisons, affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. On the mound, Brandon Walter makes his second career Triple-A start for Worcester . Radio coverage is live at 10:45 a.m. on 100.1 FM The Pike, 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
