Bisons Upended by Rochester in Series Finale

Buffalo Bisons News Release

ROCHESTER, NY - After winning the nightcap of yesterday's doubleheader 13-0, the Rochester Red Wings returned the favour in Sunday's series finale by defeating the Buffalo Bisons 11-2 at Frontier Field to win the series four games to two.

It was a bullpen day for the Herd that began with Derek Holland, but the lefty gave up six runs off five hits including two-run homers to Taylor Gushue and Adrian Sanchez to put the Bisons in an early hole.

On a day where the Bisons used eight pitchers, only half of them - Shaun Anderson, Kyle Johnston, Adrian Hernandez, and Jake Elliott - had clean innings. Elliott had a brief cameo with the Bisons back in early May, but has spent a majority of the season pitching with Double-A New Hampshire.

Andrew Stevenson was a particular thorn in the Bisons' side, as the Red Wings centerfielder scored four runs and was a triple shy of the cycle, with his big three-run homer in the sixth coming off Graham Spraker.

The Bison offence was stifled by Cole Henry, the Nationals' third-rated prospect and second-rated pitching prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Henry went five shutout innings and allowed just three singles in his Triple-A debut. He had been virtually unhittable at Double-A Harrisburg, where he had a 0.76 ERA across seven starts over 23.2 innings prior to his promotion.

Cory Abbott came out of the bullpen in relief of Henry and threw 2.2 innings while striking out six. The Bisons first run came in the sixth when Cullen Large hit a one-out, bases-loaded single to drive in Samad Taylor, but the following two batters would strike out to leave the runners stranded.

The Herd added a run in the ninth off back-to-back doubles by Large and Kellin Deglan before Francisco Perez finished things off one batter later.

The Bisons will enjoy an off day tomorrow before returning home to Sahlen Field for the first time in two weeks to welcome in the Worcester Red Sox. The six-game series will begin with a rare morning game on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 a.m. EST.
