LAST TIME OUT

MOOSIC, PA (June 4, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Vejigantes were defeated by the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 2-1 on Friday evening. Ender Inciarte hit his third home run of the season to supply the only tally for SWB.

The IronPigs loaded the bases with no outs in the first against Vejigantes starter Ken Waldichuk. However, Waldichuk limited the damage by inducing a double-play groundout to give up just one run. Waldichuk settled in after that and pitched five innings of one-run ball with five punchouts in his third Scranton/Wilkes-Barre start.

SWB got on the board in the fifth against IronPigs starter Ricardo Sánchez. Ender Inciarte hit his third home run of the season to right field to tie the game at one. It was the first big fly for Inciarte since hitting two out in Syracuse on April 8. Sánchez allowed one run over five innings with a season-high seven strikeouts. Lehigh Valley retook the lead in the seventh after Yairo Muñoz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Vejigantes then threatened with the bases loaded and one out in their half of the eighth, but could not plate the tying run. José Peraza finished 2-for-4 in the loss and is now 4-for-8 this series.

Corey Oswalt (4-1) earned the victory out of Lehigh Valley's bullpen. Mark Appel (3) logged his third save. Michael Gomez (1-3) was saddled with the loss for SWB after allowing one run in an inning of relief.

NEWS & NOTES

FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders welcome back the Lehigh Valley IronPigs for their second series at PNC Field this season. The RailRilders had won the first two games of the set back in April before dropping the final four in a row for their third-straight series loss. This will be the final trip to this ballpark this season for the IronPigs.

MY COUSIN VINNY - Vinny Nittoli will serve as the opener today. Nittoli was an opener for Matt Krook on May 29 against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, tossing 1.2 innings with two strikeouts and one hit of scoreless baseball. It was his first RailRiders start. Nittoli has pitched once in this series, going a perfect 1-2-3 on Wednesday.

COLTON 45 - Colton Eastman takes the ball for Lehigh Valley today. It will be the second time the RailRiders see him this season and the third time overall. Last time he pitched here was also the finale of a series on May 1 where he allowed one earned run in 4.1 innings of work. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre went on to drop that finale by a 9-3 finale

THE BAD STUFF - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre enters Sunday with their lowest win-loss ratio of the season, 14 games under .500. They have been held to three runs or less in seven of their last eight games and nine of eleven games during this homestand. They also enter today 14.5 games back of first-place Rochester, the furthest they've been behind this season.

THE GOOD STUFF - RailRiders' pitching has been impressive this week. Save game one on June 3, the opposition has scored three or less runs in three of the last four games. The SWB bullpen has thrown 22.2 innings in this series against Lehigh Valley, surrendering just three runs, only two of which were earned (0.79 ERA)

REAL QUICK - RailRiders batters have struck out the second fewest times in the International League. Pitching has the fourth most strikeouts.

MOVE AND GROOVE - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre welcomes back Miguel Andújar after a ten-game stint with the New York Yankees. He went 9-for-26 during this most recent trip (.346). Additionally, the Yankees made a trade to acquire INF/OF Jake Bauers from the Cincinnati Reds organization for cash considerations yesterday. Bauers had played 29 games with Louisville Bats, batting .135 with 3 HR and 12 RBI. He was assigned to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. As soon as he appears for SWB, it will be his fourth International League team played for (Durham, Columbus, and Louisville). Bauers was originally in the San Diego Padres organization. José Mujica was transferred to the Double-A Somerset Patriots. Evan Alexander was released by the New York Yankees.

STREAKY - Phillip Evans has a five-game hit streak... José Peraza has a four-game hit streak... Vinny Nittoli has not been charged with a run in five-straight relief appearances... Greg Weissert has not been charged with a run in four-straight appearances...Trevor Lane enters today with having not been charged with a run in four straight games...

TWO GAME SPLIT - The RailRiders split a doubleheader Friday with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is now 4-8 in their six doubleheaders this season, having swept just one against the Syracuse Mets back in April. It was the second time they faced Lehigh Valley in a doubleheader this season. They have lost three of those four games.

ON DECK - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will head on the road after today's finale against the IronPigs to face the Syracuse Mets. They have won seven of eleven games against them including four of five games played at NBT Bank Stadium. They will be back in that ballpark starting on Tuesday to play seven games (doubleheader Wednesday courtesy of a snow out on April 10).

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION - The New York Yankees (38-15) blanked the Detroit Tigers for the second straight day with a 3-0 final on Saturday. Luis Severino struck out ten batters in 7.0 IP, allowing just one hit which came in the second inning as the only hit in the game for Detroit. Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo hit solo homers. Jordan Montgomery faces Rony Garcia in day baseball today at 11:35 AM... The Somerset Patriots (31-18) lost in ten innings 3-2 to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.
