Saints Take Series and Home Run Record

Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (25-28) dropped the series finale to the St. Paul Saints (24-29) by a final score of 16-7 on Sunday at Principal Park.

The trouble started for Iowa's pitching staff right away, when Matt Dermody surrendered a home run to the first batter of the game, Spencer Steer. Two batters later, Tim Beckham added a solo shot of his own, and the I-Cubs trailed 2-0 heading to the bottom of the first.

The Saints didn't let up from there, adding three more runs on their third home run of the game in the second inning. The I-Cubs held them scoreless in the third, but Steer launched his second homer of the day in the fourth, giving the Saints six runs on three homers through four.

In their own half innings, the I-Cubs tried to mount a comeback. They put together two hits, a walk and a hit batter in the second to plate their first three runs, then collected two unearned runs in the fifth, cutting the Saints' lead to one, at 6-5.

From there, it was all Saints. They added three runs on two home runs in the sixth, a run on two hits in the seventh, and four runs on a home run and four walks in the eighth. While the I-Cubs tried to keep up, they scored just one run in the sixth, bringing the score to 14-6 after eight innings.

Each side had one more long ball left for the ninth, as Alex Kirilloff teed off on a two-run shot for St. Paul and Nelson Velazquez hit a solo home run for Iowa. On a record eight home runs, the Saints took the game and the series by a final score of 16-7.

POSTGAME NOTES:

The I-Cubs gave up eight home runs in a game for the first time in franchise history. The previous high was seven on July 26, 2007, in Colorado Springs.

Before the current series against the Saints, the I-Cubs had not allowed more than seven home runs in a series this year. St. Paul more than doubled that total, hitting 18 homers in six games this week.

After going the first 52 games of the season without allowing a multi-homer game by any opposing player, the I-Cubs surrendered a three-homer game and two two-homer games today.

John Hicks (8), Dixon Machado (7), Narciso Crook (6), Nelson Velazquez (5) and Levi Jordan (5) all extended their hitting streaks today, marking a season-high for each batter.

Iowa will take tomorrow off before hitting the road for a six-game series in Toledo. The I-Cubs and the Mud Hens will play game one on Tuesday, with first pitch set for 6:05 CT. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
