Swift Current Broncos News Release
Kamloops, B.C. - The Swift Current Broncos defeated the Kamloops Blazers on Tuesday by a 6-3 score in the fourth of the five game B.C. road swing.
The Broncos got things going just five minutes into the game as Josh Filmon notched his fourth goal of the season, extending his point streak to seven games. That was followed up by Mathew Ward notching his fifth of the year to kick off the third period, giving the Broncos a 2-0 lead.
Although, while the Blazers outshot the Broncos 21-7 in the first period, they wouldn't back down in the second, finally breaking through with a Dylan Sydor powerplay goal to make it 2-1. And then a Connor Levis goal to make it 2-2 and all of a sudden, the third period energy ramped up.
The Broncos would notch back-to-back powerplay goals from Owen Pickering and Ward's second of the night as the two goal lead was restored. Rylan Gould would add another one before the Blazers struck on a five-on-three to bring it back to 5-3.
Van Eger added an empty netter for the Broncos to cap off the win, while Reid Dyck ultimately stopped 40 of 43 he saw in the contest.
"Really happy with the win, the perseverance, the guys came through," said Assistant Coach Taras McEwen. "It was a tight game, it was one of those games that you have to go through, those moments you have to go through and you learn and you learn how to win."
Mathew Ward ended the night with four points, shining in his return to his hometown, while brother Sam Ward was excellent defensively and ended the night with a +1 rating.
"It was really exciting to see Mathew have the game he did, and Sam played really well too, just moving pucks and being good on the defensive side," McEwen said. "But a lot of excitement and I know the boys are really excited to get that win.
The Broncos wrap up the B.C. swing on Wednesday night when they visit Kelowna.
