Erie SeaWolves News Release

The Erie SeaWolves took down the New Britain Rock Cats on Wednesday night in a come-from-behind extra innings victory, 5-2 at New Britain Stadium.

The SeaWolves struck first in the top of the second inning against New Britain starter Ryan Mullins. Ryan Roberson led off with a single and Jeff Frazier singled to put a pair on. After a Deik Scram strikeout, Santo De Leon walked to load the bases for Shawn Roof. Roof connected on a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Roberson for a 1-0 Erie lead.

The Rock Cats tied the game in the bottom of the third against Erie starter Guillermo Moscoso. Brandon Roberts led off the inning with a walk and he stole second. Roberts moved over to third on a groundout by Matt Tolbert and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Steve Tolleson, making it a 1-1 game.

New Britain would then take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Danny Valencia tripled off the wall in center with one out and he would score on a Brian Dinkelman single for a 2-1 lead. The hit by Dinkelman would be the last hit in the game for the ‘Cats.

The score remained 2-1 in favor of New Britain until the top of the ninth inning. Rock Cats closer Ben Julianel came into the game in search of his 25th save of the season. Erie, however, had other plans. Coming into the game Julianel had converted on 24 of 25 save opportunities. Ramirez led off with a base hit to right and with one out, was thrown out attempting to steal second. With two away, Frazier walked, Scram singled and De Leon walked to load the bases for Roof. Roof hit a ground ball to third that was fielded by Valencia. He went the short route to second, however, Dinkelman dropped the ball which would have ended the game. Frazier scored, tying the game at 2-2.

Josh Kite worked a perfect ninth inning to send the game to extras and that's when the SeaWolves capitalized on the New Britain ninth-inning miscue.

The ‘Cats went to righty Frank Mata in the top of the 10th. Mata hit Casper Wells with one out to put the go-ahead run on base for the ‘Wolves. With two outs, Roberson drew his second walk of the game putting Wells into scoring position for Frazier. Frazier connected on an opposite-field single, his third hit of the night, scoring Wells, giving Erie a 3-2 lead. Scram followed and put the game away with a two-run double to the wall in left-center, scoring both Roberson and Frazier for a 5-2 lead.

Angel Castro tossed a perfect bottom of the 10th with two strikeouts to pick up his second save, preserving the Erie win. Kite (2-0) picked up the win.

Moscoso took the no-decision for the SeaWolves. He worked a season-best seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Moscoso has now struck out 33 hitters in 23 innings of work.

The win for the ‘Wolves improved their record to 6-5 in extra innings games. It was only the third win on the season for the Howlers when trailing heading into the ninth.
