Harrisburg Senators News Release
Trenton, NJ - RHP Bobby Brownlie returned to his home state of New Jersey for the first time in affiliated professional baseball and threw well, but didn't get much support Thursday night at Waterfront Park. The Trenton Thunder erupted late in the game for a 5-3 victory over the Harrisburg Senators. Brownlie did not figure in the decision as the Senators were swept in their second straight three-game series.
Brownlie went seven innings and allowed just one run on four hits and three walks while striking out seven. Trenton RHP Jason Jones upstaged Brownlie, firing eight innings and allowing a run on three hits, a walk and four strikeouts. It was the second time this season Jones mastered the Senators, having thrown seven shutout innings against Harrisburg on April 12th.
For the second straight night, the Thunder scored in the bottom of the 1st; it was the 13th straight game in which the Senators' opposition scored first. Reegie Corona led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Kevin Russo.
The Senators got the run back in the top of the 6th. Javi Herrera drilled his second double of the night to lead off the inning. He went to second on a bunt by Marco Yepez. Garrett Guzman followed by hitting a comebacker to the mound, and Herrera managed to race home when Trenton pitcher Jason Jones fired to first. That tied the game at 1-1.
Trenton landed a big blow in the bottom of the 8th. Kevin Russo hit a one-out double to put runners at second and third, and LHP Yunior Novoa intentionally walked Chris Malec to load the bases. Colin Curtis popped up on the infield for the second out, but P.J. Pilittere blooped a two-run single to shallow left-center and when the throw to third base got away, a third run scored and Pilittere went all the way to third base with the score 4-1. Cody Ehlers followed with a grounder to second base, but a throwing error allowed another run to score and made it 5-1.
The Senators made it interesting in the top of the 9th. Mike Daniel drew a leadoff walk and Guzman followed with a two-run missile over the wall in right, a two-run homer to cut it to 5-3. A one-out single by Bill Rhinehart brought the tying run to the plate, but the Thunder turned a game-ending double play to preserve the victory.
LHP Yunior Novoa (1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs in one inning to snap a 19-inning scoreless streak. Jones picked up the win to move to 13-5.
The Senators dropped to 68-64, finishing just 2-8 on their season-long ten-game road trip. Trenton improved to 80-50.
The Senators return to Commerce Bank Park to host the Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A Boston Red Sox) in a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:35 PM. RHP Jordan Zimmermann (6-2, 3.32 ERA) takes on Portland LHP Dustin Richardson (7-7, 7.03 ERA).
