Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- In a rubber match with the Akron Aeros, the Defenders looked befuddled as Frank Herrmann controlled the flow of the game and Connecticut's bats in a 4-2 defeat.

Dave McKae and Herrmann were entangled in an old-fashioned pitcher's duel. The two starting hurlers exchanged goose eggs like it was Easter for five innings until Akron broke up the holiday.

In the top of the sixth, McKae began to leave breaking balls up in the zone and the Aeros took advantage. Brandon Pinckey nailed a single and Wes Hodges turned on an off-speed pitch and sent over the third tier of billboards in left field for a two-run homer to make it 2-0 Akron.

A scoreless seventh led to more runs for the Aeros in the eighth. When the frame finished, two more runs came across on four base hits as Akron's lead doubled to 4-0.

The Defs showed some offensive fight in the last of the eighth. With one away, Simon Klink hit a pea-shot to center field for a double. Another out was then recorded to force Connecticut to rally with their backs against the wall. Eddy Martinez-Esteve was up to the challenge as he bounced a single through the right side of the infield to bring Klink home. Mike Mooney drew a walk and Kyle Haines slapped an opposite field single to right to send Martinez-Esteve to the plate. Julio Cordido's strikeout closed the frame with the Defs closing in on a 4-2 game.

Connecticut never had much of a chance in the ninth as they eventually fell by the 4-2 final. McKae would suffer his eighth loss, Herrmann won his tenth and Reid Santos locked down save number two.

The Defenders will welcome the Erie SeaWolves into town for the final three games of the 2008 season. Tickets are available for all three games at ctdefenders.com or by dialing the box office at (860) 887-7962.
