'Wolves Drop Opener to Squirrels

The SeaWolves could not push across the tying run late on Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park as they dropped the series opener to the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3.

Richmond struck for a first inning run against Erie starter Josh Turley. Kelby Tomlinson led off with a triple and scored on a Matt Duffy groundout for a 1-0 lead.

In the third with two outs, the Squirrels extended the lead to 3-0. Tyler Graham singled with two outs and Duffy reached on a ground rule double putting two in scoring position. Jarrett Parker singled home the runners to push Richmond ahead by three.

Trailing 4-0 in the last of the fourth, Erie loaded the bases against Richmond starter Kelvin Marte. Jason Krizan singled, Ramon Cabrera walked and Steven Moya singled to load the bases with no outs. Corey Jones lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Krizan making it 4-1.

Erie climbed closer in the sixth. Moya and Jones each singled putting a pair on. With one out, Francisco Martinez drove in the runs with a double to the alley in left-center making it 4-3. Erie would get no closer.

The 'Wolves stranded the tying run on base in each of the last four innings as they dropped their seventh straight to Richmond.

Turley (1-1) took the loss allowing four runs on eight hits with three walks and no strikeouts in five innings.
