Curve Bite Howlers in Rubber Game and Win 6-3

Curve, Pa. - The Altoona Curve defeated the Erie SeaWolves 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Peoples Natural Gas Field. With the win, the Curve won their third straight series and nine of 14 games since the All-Star Break.

The Curve came across with the first run of the game in the first inning. Alen Hanson led off the frame with a bunt single and went first-to-third on a single to right by Drew Maggi. The shortstop scored his team-most 52nd run of the season when Josh Bell bounced a ball to the right side of the infield.

Erie tied the game in the third. Dixon Machado singled, stole second, and later scored on a groundout by Jamie Johnson.

Altoona took their second run of the game in the fifth inning to reclaim the lead. Gift Ngoepe drew a walk to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ngoepe then moved up another base after a balk and scored on Bell's first hit of the game, an infield single.

With the Curve leading 2-1, they added onto that lead in the sixth. After a pair of leadoff walks from Dan Gamache and Keon Broxton, the duo advanced a bag each on a bunt single by Willy Garcia. With the bases loaded, Carlos Paulino hit a sac fly that scored Gamache, advanced Broxton to third, and gave Altoona a 3-1 lead. After that, Garcia attempted to steal second. After a throw down to second, the SeaWolves made an error which allowed Broxton to score from third.

Erie scored a run in the seventh to cut the lead to Curve lead to two, but the Curve tallied two more in the bottom of the inning. Maggi led off the Curve seventh with a walk, stole second, and scored on a single by Gamache. The Curve designated hitter advanced to second on the throw home and Gamache later scored on Broxton's first hit of the game.

Thomas Harlan (2-1) picked up the win after he matched a career-best with 6.1 innings and he allowed just two runs on seven hits. It was Harlan's career quality start. Warwick Saupold (7-9) suffered the loss for the SeaWolves.

Altoona begins a four-game series with the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Thursday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. "Piney" from Sons of Anarchy will be at the ballpark to throw out the first pitch and sign autographs for the fans in attendance thanks to Miller Lite and City Beverage. Thursday's game is another Thirsty ThursdayTM presented by Rocky 104.9 with 16 oz. drafts of Miller Lite and regular sodas available for just $2. Gates open at 5 p.m. with live music on the Rocky Gap Casino Resort Entertainment Deck from Cousin Mike. The lid-lifter versus Richmond is also a Silver Steamers Club Game presented by Homewood at Martinsburg and the game also features free motorcycle parking.

LHP Zack Dodson (3-7, 5.25) will take the hill for the Curve in the first game of the four-game series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels and he will be opposed by Giants' top prospect Kyle Crick (6-5, 3.09) First pitch is at 7 p.m. while pregame on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM, and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
