Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Akron, Ohio) July 30, 2014 - Despite the ongoing Hot Tub Survivor promotion at Canal Park, it was the Akron RubberDucks who were in hot water entering the game Wednesday afternoon.
Akron starter Duke von Schamman (5-6) hurled an impressive seven innings Wednesday afternoon to help the RubberDucks to a 4-0 win over the Bowie Baysox at Canal Park to avoid a three-game sweep in shutout fashion.
The 23-year-old allowed five hits while walking one en route to his second-straight win and 14-consecutive scoreless innings. The single walk was the only one issued by the righty in his last three starts. Von Schamann fanned four-straight batters in the first and second innings and ended his outing with six total strikeouts, matching his highest mark of the season dating back to April 9. The outing was von Schamann's 4th straight start where he went at least seven innings deep.
The victory helps the 'Ducks stay in second place, three and a half games ahead of the Baysox in the EL West. The win also helped the RubberDucks snap a nine-game losing streak at home. In addition to snapping the losing streak, Akron posted the first run of the game for the first time in the nine-game streak. The run came on an Anthony Gallas sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to give Akron a 1-0 lead.
Bowie reliever Jason Gurka issued Tim Fedroff a bases-loaded walk in the sixth, allowing a run to score as the 'Ducks pulled ahead 2-0. A pair of runs were added on in the eighth frame when Alex Lavisky worked his way out of a run down on his way to the plate, and Justin Toole added an RBI single that sealed the game at 4-0.
A single to left field in the in the third inning pushed shortstop Erik Gonzalez to an 11-game hitting streak.
Bowie starter Tim Berry (5-7) was handed the loss after allowing two runs and five hits in 5.1 innings on the mound.
The RubberDucks will travel to take on the Harrisburg Senators in the first installment of a four-game series on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Akron will send RHP Joe Colon (8-6, 2.82) to the mound while RHP James Simmons (2-1,5.68) is the expected starter for the Senators. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
