Clinton LumberKings News Release
Eastlake, OH - Kalian Sams went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a two-run homer and Mickey Wiswall went 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs and three RBI as the Clinton LumberKings rolled to a 7-2 win over the Lake County Captains Saturday night at Classic Park. Left-hander James Paxton struck out nine over five scoreless innings for the win.
Sams put the LumberKings on the board with two outs in the first inning as he lined a single out of the reach of diving second-baseman Argenis Martinez, scoring Wiswall. Stefen Romero then roped a double over the head of left-fielder Anthony Gallas to score Sams for a 2-0 advantage.
Wiswall ripped a laser over the right-field fence for a solo home run in the third inning, raising the Clinton lead to 2-0. With Jorge Agudelo on in the fifth, he went deep again, this time lifting a majestic two-run shot over the center-field fence. Captains' centerfielder LaVon Washington timed his leap but couldn't bring it back as Wiswall became the first LumberKing to homer twice in a game since Blake Ochoa did it on July 24, 2010 at Lansing.
After Tim Morris reached on an error, Sams blasted off over the left-field bleachers for his team-leading seventh home run - his third in as many nights - raising the lead to 7-0.
All three home runs and seven runs were given up by Captains' right-hander Jordan Cooper over five innings of work. Cooper (L, 1-2) walked one and struck out six.
Meanwhile, the newly-minted Midwest League All-Star Paxton grounded the Captains all night, limiting them to two hits and four walks while striking out nine. Paxton (W, 2-2) ran into a first-inning jam as he started his night allowing a single to Washington and walking Carlos Moncrief, but shortstop Anthony Phillips turned a 6-3 double play to help keep Lake County off the scoreboard.
Left-hander Nate Reed gave up two runs in the eighth as Giovanny Urshela doubled home Washington and Alex Monsalve lifted a sacrifice fly to a diving Jabari Blash in center scoring Moncrief. Reed was assisted by another double play, this time started by third-baseman Romero to avoid further damage. Reed yielded two runs on three hits over 3.0 innings.
Right-hander Jonathan Arias worked around a single and a walk to finish off the ninth, giving the Kings their fourth win in five games on the road trip.
Washington had the only multi-hit game for the Captains, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The LumberKings (18-39) close out the three-game series and the six-game East Division trip against the Captains (26-30) tomorrow afternoon at Classic Park, first pitch scheduled for 12:00 PM central time. Right-hander Forrest Snow (1-7, 4.10) starts for Clinton against Lake County right-hander Cole Cook (2-5, 4.76). Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
