Loons Downed by the Chiefs

MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons were unable to come back from the seven runs put up by the Peoria Chiefs early in Saturday night's contest, and eventually fell 11-4 before a Dow Diamond crowd of 4,033 fans.

The Loons cut into the Chiefs lead in the sixth inning, jump started by two walks from Peoria's starting pitcher Cam Greathouse. Chris Jacobs scored on a throwing error by shortstop Arismendy Alcantara, which was followed by a Michael Pericht single that ended Greathouse's night. Stepping in for Peoria was Yohan Gonzalez, who allowed Joe Becker an RBI-single and Jon Garcia a sacrifice fly to left field.

The three-run inning was closest the Loons got to mounting any comeback, but the Chiefs pulled away with runs in the final three innings. First baseman Richard Jones hit a home run to right-center field in the seventh off of Loons reliever Andrew Pevsner and clean-up batter Greg Rohan knocked a two-run double to the gap in left-center field in the eighth. With Raul Burgos on the hill in the ninth, Micah Gibbs scored on a fielder's choice.

Starting for the Loons was lefty Ryan Christenson, who was named to the Midwest League All-Star Team on Friday. Christenson had a rough outing, allowing seven runs, five earned, on eight hits through three innings. He received the loss, his fourth of the year.

"Tonight Ryan Christenson did not have his best stuff and we made a couple of mistakes behind him," Loons manager John Shoemaker said. "We're facing a good hitting team and you put all that together and you're going to be in for a long night...We walked quite a few and gave Peoria a lot of opportunities with runners on base."

Loons reliever Pete Budkevics had the most success against the scrappy Peoria line-up, who he limited to one hit through three innings of middle relief. Peoria's Greathouse picked up his fourth win of the season, pitching 5.1 innings.

The Loons only other run crossed the plate on a Kyung-Min Na fielding error of Becker's single in the fourth inning. Becker, making his first start for the Loons this season, went three-for-four batting eighth.

The Loons will conclude their six-game homestand on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. following a pre-game youth clinic presented by Farm Bureau Insurance. The youth clinic is open to any fans with tickets to Sunday's game. Starting on the mound for the Loons will be recently-named Midwest League All-Star pitcher Garrett Gould (5-2, 1.83). RHP Hayden Simpson (1-2, 5.09) will throw for the Chiefs. Sundays are always Family Fun in the SUNdays, where post-game kids can run the bases of Dow Diamond.
