Big inning again dooms Kernels in 6-1 loss to Whitecaps

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps used a five-run 4th inning to down the Kernels 6-1 on Saturday night. Both teams were held scoreless until the Whitecaps exploded for five runs in the 4th inning against Kernels starter Heath Nichols. Hernan Perez led off with a single, and Rob Brantly doubled to put runners at 2nd and 3rd base. Both runners came home on a single to center by Nick Castellanos, giving West Michigan a 2-0 lead.

Nichols then struck out a batter and induced a groundout for the second out of the inning. With two outs, Jeff Rowland walked and Billy Nowlin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dixon Machado cleared the bases with a triple, making the score 5-0 Whitecaps. Nichols (2-5) went 3.2 innings and allowed five runs on four hits. He struck out two and walked four.

The Kernels got on the board with an unearned run against West Michigan starter Josue Carreno in the 6th inning. Wes Hatton reached on fielding error by shortstop Dixon Machado. Hatton reached 3rd base on a single to right field by David Harris. Hatton scored on a RBI groundout by Ricky Alvarez, cutting West Michigan's lead to 5-1. Carreno (3-6) went eight innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits. He struck out eight and walked one.

Caleb Graham went 3.1 innings out of the bullpen for the Kernels. He allowed no runs on one hit while striking out five and walking none. The Whitecaps added one more run in the 8th inning. James Robbins singled and stole 2nd base. He later scored on a RBI single by Jeff Rowland, making the score 6-1. Beau Brooks pitched one inning in relief and allowed one run on two hits while striking out none and walking one.

Michael Torrealba pitched the 9th inning for West Michigan. He allowed no runs on one hit while striking out one and walking one. Jesus Campos led the Kernels offense by going 2-4. Alvarez had one hit and one RBI. Harris and Rolando Gomez both had one hit.

The Kernels conclude the three game series and the six game road trip at West Michigan on Sunday at noon, returning home on Tuesday, June 7 to open at six game home stand with games against Great Lakes and Lansing.
