Chiefs Win 11-4 Saturday

Midland, MI - The Peoria Chiefs scored seven times in the first three innings and four times in the last three for an 11-4 win over the Great Lakes Loons on Saturday night. The win moves the Chiefs to 30-26 on the season and 3-6 on the 10-game road trip that ends Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs jumped on All-Star Ryan Christenson from the beginning and forced the Loons into some early mistakes. Matt Szczur drew a leadoff walk and David Macias was hit in the foot. Ryan Cuneo put the Chiefs up 1-0 with a single in the first before an error at second base loaded the bases with one out. Micah Gibbs hit a potential inning-ending double play ball, but Christian Lara threw wide of first base allowing Macias and Cuneo to score for a 3-0 lead. Great Lakes loaded the bases in the bottom of the first against Cam Greathouse but a 1-2-3 double play ended the threat. The Chiefs appeared to break the game wide open in the third while knocking Christenson out of the contest. Cuneo led off with a walk and singles by Richard Jones and Gibbs loaded the bases with one down. Arismendy Alcantara lined a triple to the left-center field wall as all three runners scored for a 6-0 Chiefs lead. DJ Fitzgerald made it 7-0 with a single to right before the Loons escaped the inning as the Chiefs left the bases loaded. Great Lakes finally got on the board against Greathouse in the fourth inning. With one down. Blake Dean doubled and scored on a single by Joe Becker and an error in right-field by Kyung-Min Na. The Loons continued their rally in the sixth inning as Greathouse walked the first two batters. On a grounder back to the mound, Greathouse got an out at second but Alcantara threw wild past first allowing Chris Jacobs to score. After an infield single from Michael Pericht, Yohan Gonzalez relieved Greathouse and gave up a RBI single to Becker. A walk loaded the bases and Great Lakes cut the Chiefs lead to 7-4 on a sacrifice fly from Jon Garcia. Great Lakes loaded the bases to bring the go-ahead run to the plate but Greg Rohan reached into the stands to catch a foul pop up off the bat of Christian Lara to end the threat. The Chiefs put the game away with four late runs. Jones hit his team-leading ninth homer with one out in the seventh for a solo homer and an 8-4 Chiefs lead. In the eighth against reliever Andrew Pevsner, Fitzgerald led off with a walk and Na singled. With two down, Cuneo drew his second walk of the game and Rohan drove home two with a double to left-center. The Chiefs put the finishing touches on an 11-4 win in the ninth without a basehit. Raul Burgos walked three and with one out, Szczur beat out a fielder's choice for an RBI and the final run of the game. Greathouse (4-3) allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked five, struck out two and induced two double plays. Gonzalez threw 1 2/3 innings allowing one hit and two walks as two inherited runners scored. Larry Suarez allowed one hit over two shutout innings while striking out two.
