South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks held a lead through seven innings, but could not hold on in a 5-3 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits Saturday evening at Coveleski Stadium. South Bend falls to 29-27 overall on the season with the defeat.
The River Bandits pushed across three runs to go ahead 5-3 in a decisive eighth inning. Starlin Rodriguez smashed a solo shot to left field off reliever Jeff Shields (L, 3-5) to tie the ballgame at 3-3. Joseph Bergman followed with a single and crossed home plate on a triple by Colin Walsh. Walsh scored when Michael Swinson grounded out to first base.
South Bend started the scoring in the first inning as Ender Inciarte led off with a single on Quad Cities starting pitcher Boone Whiting (ND) and Mike Freeman followed with a double. Zach Walters plated Inciarte on a ground out to second base. Freeman scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Yazy Arbelo to give the Silver Hawks a 2-0 advantage.
The River Bandits scored their first run of the series in the fifth frame. Michael Swinson drew a walk off Silver Hawks starting pitcher Tyler Green (ND) to start the rally. Cody Stanley scored Swinson when he bounced out to second.
South Bend tallied a single run in the bottom of the fifth as Inciarte tripled and later scored on a Freeman single.
Quad Cities pulled within one in the seventh off Shields. Swinson led off with a walk and Stanley scored him on a base hit, closing the Silver Hawks lead to 3-2. Ronny Gil tried to score from second on the hit, but was gunned down on a throw from Silver Hawks center fielder Inciarte.
Green struck out a season-high eight batters in five innings of five-hit work. The righty gave up a single run and walked three in the no-decision. Meanwhile, Shields threw three innings, suffering four runs (one unearned) on five hits and one walk.
The Silver Hawks have won thirteen of their last eighteen games and are 8-3 on the current home stand with one left to play before going on the road for nine games.
The Silver Hawks complete the scheduled thirteen game home stand against the Quad Cities River Bandits (St. Louis Cardinals) on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. LHP Patrick Schuster (4-2, 3.36 ERA) will start for South Bend against LHP Anthony Ferrara (4-2, 3.19). Pregame coverage begins at 1:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
