Wings Wallop Chiefs in Series Opener

The Rochester Red Wings pounded out 19 hits in a 9-1 victory over the Syracuse Chiefs Tuesday night at Frontier Field. The series continues Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., another $1 Wednesday, with $1 Zweigle's hot dogs, peanuts, chips, and Cracker Jack.

The Wings offense jumped out to the lead in the first inning against Chiefs starter Cesar Vargas, as Zach Granite ripped a ball up the middle to start off the frame with a lead off single. Zach LaMarre followed with an RBI triple, his first of the year as a Red Wing. Jake Cave extended the inning the next at bat after he roped a line drive double to left, scoring LaMarre. After a pop out, Brock Stassi stepped up to the plate with two outs and hit a RBI single to right to extend the Wings lead to 3-0 after the first inning of play.

In the top of the fourth, Syracuse got their first run after former Red Wing Matt Hague hit a home run over the left field fence off Red Wings starting pitcher Aaron Slegers..

The Wings answered back in the bottom of the fifth after Kennys Vargas smoked a ball to right which plated LaMarre, who led off the inning with a double. After a walk to the next batter, the Chiefs made a call to the bullpen to relieve starter, Cesar Vargas. Vargas went 4.1 innings allowing 8 hits and two walks while giving up four earned runs.

Slegers allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out one through 6.0 innings. He threw 73 pitches, 47 for strikes. Tyler Duffey took over in the top of the seventh inning.

Taylor Featherston led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, before being moved to second on a Granite single. LaMarre then came through again with a two-RBI double, good for his third hit of the day. Vargas then stepped to the plate and produced another run producing single to knock in LaMarre. Jermaine Curtis kept the rally going with a single before Stassi came through with his second RBI single of the night.

The Wings added a run in the seventh, on LaMarre's fourth RBI of the night coming on a fielder's choice.

Duffey worked two scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out one. Gabriel Moya pitched the ninth, ending the game with a strikeout.

The 19 hits was the Wings' best offensive output of the season, topping the 14 hits May 7 at Buffalo.

Granite, playing just his second game in left field, made two outstanding catches to take away extra base hits.
