Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - Jake Bauers recorded three hits and sparked the Durham Bulls' comeback in a series-opening 3-1 win over the Louisville Bats at Durham Bulls Athletic Park Tuesday night.
The Bats grabbed the lead 1-0 in the fourth inning off a solo home run by Steve Selsky, and held that lead through the seventh inning stretch.
In the seventh, Bauers strolled to the plate with Willy Adames on first following a single to left field, and stroked a double scoring the speedy shortstop on a close play at the plate tying the game, 1-1.
A bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning to Adames gave the Bulls a 2-1 lead, and Bauers continued his clutch hitting with an RBI single through the hole at shortstop, scoring Jeremy Hazelbaker and extending the Bulls lead to 3-1.
A bullpen day for the Bulls saw four pitchers take the mound and limit the Bats to one run on four hits, posting a season-high 17 strikeouts overall with Diego Castillo leading the way fanning five batters across 2.2 frames.
Mike Franco got the start, working a solid 2.0 innings, striking out four and holding Louisville hitless. Colin Poche made his second appearance for the Bulls, posting 3.0 innings, and allowing the only run on two hits with four strikeouts.
Adam Kolarek (W, 3-0) earned his third win of the season, fanning four batters as every Bulls pitcher struck out at least four batters as the Bulls rallied to open the six-game homestand with a win. Bulls pitching held the Bats to 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position, and stranded five runners on base.
The Bulls (22-14) host the Bats (12-22) in the second of this three-game set at Durham Bulls Athletic Park Wednesday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
