Norfolk Tides News Release
Mike Yastrzemski finished a home run short of the cycle and Garabez Rosa drove in three runs with a four-hit night, but the Indianapolis Indians used a 10-run second inning to knock off Norfolk 10-8 in a wild contest Tuesday night at Harbor Park.
The Indians sent 15 men to the plate in the second frame, plating 10 runs on seven hits, three walks, a hit batter and an error. Indianapolis registered six singles and a three-run double by Wyatt Mathisen in the frame, with Mathisen and Pablo Reyes each collecting two hits and scoring two runs apiece in the inning. Six of the runs were unearned, with Chris Lee (0-2) taking the loss in his third start of the season. The 10-run inning was just two runs shy of matching Norfolk's franchise record for most runs allowed in an inning, a 12-run frame for the Ottawa Lynx on 7/24/06.
Yastrzemski and Rosa helped mount a furious comeback, as Norfolk plated four runs in the third, a single run in the fourth and three more in the seventh. The Tides brought the tying run to the plate in both the seventh and ninth innings, but couldn't push across the equalizing run as they dropped the opener of the three-game set.
Playing in his first game with the Tides this season after being promoted from Double-A Bowie, Yastrzemski hit an RBI triple in the third inning, doubled and scored in the fourth, then singled in the sixth. He fell just shy of becoming the first Tide to hit for a cycle since Timo Perez accomplished the feat vs. Columbus on 6/9/00.
Rosa singled four times in the contest, matching his career-high for hits in a game. The four-hit night raised his average by 20 points, while the three RBI matched his season-high.
Joely Rodriguez was tremendous out of the bullpen for the Tides, as he allowed one hit over four shutout innings of work.
Former Tide Damien Magnifico (1-1) earned the win, while Johnny Hellweg worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.
The Tides and Indians will continue their three-game set on Wednesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 6:35. Yefry Ramirez (1-2, 4.54) is set to start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander J.T. Brubaker (1-0, 0.00).
Notes: In a series of roster moves prior to Tuesday's game, RHP David Hess and RHP Jimmy Yacabonis were activated to Norfolk's roster after being sent down from Baltimore, IF Renato Núñez was outrighted to the Tides, and OF Michael Saunders was released from his Norfolk contract...Drew Dosch doubled twice as part of a three-hit night, extending his hitting streak to eight games and giving him nine doubles in just 20 games this season...With a single against left-hander Josh Smoker Tuesday, Austin Wynns has now hit .520 (13-25) against left-handed pitching this season.
