LAST TIME OUT: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders pitching staff struck out a season-high 14 batters in a 3-1 loss against the Rochester RedWings on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field. Rochester scored first in the top of the second inning, when Kennys Vargas and Wynston Sawyer drove singles off Daniel Camarena ahead of a three-run home run from Nick Buss.
The big fly was the only blemish against the southpaw in the game, who lasted 5.1 innings yielding just the three runs on four hits, walking three and striking out eight. The eight punchouts were a new Triple-A career-high for Camarena (2-2), who last struck out eight on June 24, 2016, while with Double-A Trenton.
In the bottom of the third, Clint Frazier got the RailRiders on the board with a mammoth solo home run off Miles Jaye to narrow the gap to 3-1. The round-tripper was Frazier's third of the season, and second in as many contest. Frazier was strong at the plate for the RailRiders, finishing 3-for-5 with a home run and an RBI. The outfielder now has an 11-game on-base streak, during which he is hitting .395 (17-for-43).
AN AWAKENING, (STILL NEEDED): Last week featured three strong offensive performances in the RailRiders 3-3 week @ Syracuse and vs. Rochester where the offense scored 7+ runs, but it managed only one run in 2-of-3 losses as well.Overall, the week was an improvement for SWB who scored 29 runs (4.8/game) on 50 hits (8.3/game) on the heels of a rather sluggish previous nine games, where they combining for 20 runs (2.2/game) on 58 hits (6.4/game) and only twice scored more than four runs in a game in that stretch.
NUMBERS ARE (RED) ROCKETING UP: OF Clint Frazier was 3-for-6, 2 2B, HR, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB in Friday's doubleheader, before goint 3-for-5 with a home run in his secon straight game vs. Rochester. Those numbers continue an upward trend for the outfielder as he works his way back towards the big leagues battling concussion symptoms throughout Spring Training and the early part of the season. After going 0-for-4 in first game with RailRiders this year, Frazier is 17-for-his-last-43 (.395 AVG), 4 BB/1 HBP (.458 OBP), 3 2B/2 3B/3 HR (.767 SLG) in his last 11G.
READY TO PITCH: In Friday's Game One, the Rochester Red Wings plated 4-of-5 inherited runners off the RailRiders bullpen. LHP Oliver Perez allowed both runners he inherited to score when OF Jake Cave delivered a two-out, two-run, go-ahead single in the top of the 5th inning, and RHP Cody Carroll entered with the bases loaded in the 8th inning and 2-of-3 runners scored. This season, the RailRiders have allowed 17-of-41 (41.5%) inherited runners to score, and a large part of that is that bullpen arms are allowing first hitters to bat 18-for-71 (.254 BAA) with a .321 OBP (26-for-81).
DOESN'T LIKE WAITING: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's C Erik Kratz is tied for the team lead with C Kyle Higashioka and OF Zack Zehner for the team lead with 4 HR this season. He is tied despite the fact that Higashioka (93 AB) and Zehner (103 AB) have accumulated significantly more at-bats than Kratz (40 AB). The 37-year old homered in his most recent AB which snapped a 14-AB homerless drought, which was the longest of the season for him. So far his year has gone like this: 7 AB // HR // 8 AB // HR // 7 AB // HR // 14 AB // HR
