Wings Fall to Bisons 10-8
May 18, 2023 - International League (IL)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Rochester Red Wings took the field Thursday night against the Buffalo Bisons in the third game of the series after a comeback, 7-4 win. Despite scoring eight runs in the fifth inning, the Wings allowed 10 unanswered runs and dropped their second game of the series.
The Wings and the Bisons were deadlocked in a pitcher's duel through the first four innings of the game, with neither team amassing more than four hits and sending just one runner to third base. While Buffalo's LHP Sean Mellen and RHP Junior Fernández locked down four scoreless innings with four strikeouts, RHP Jose Urena struck out four batters while walking two during that time.
Buffalo threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning, advancing runners to second and third base following consecutive singles from SS Otto Lopez and C Tyler Heineman. But Urena clamped down on the Bisons' hitters and retired the ensuing three batters. Rochester broke the four-inning stalemate when Derek Hill lined a single back at Buffalo's RHP Julian Fernández. The ball kicked off his foot and darted toward third base, allowing SS Richie Martin to score. Then, DH Carter Kieboom blooped a single just above the outstretched arm of 2B LJ Talley.
The next batter, LF Travis Blankenhorn, rocked a two-run home run to right field, his sixth of the season, to extend Rochester's lead to 4-0. The Wings continued to pile on in a fifth inning that saw Buffalo cycle through two relievers. 3B Franklin Barreto crushed an opposite-field home run, his 99th career blast, that plated three Wings. C Francisco Arcia finished off an inning that saw Rochester send 13 batters to the plate when he singled to left field and drove in Martin.
Buffalo waited no time to respond and sent 11 batters to the plate en route to a six-run bottom of the fifth. A bases-clearing triple from DH Jaime Ritchie bounced Urena, and LHP Anthony Banda came to relieve him, giving up two hits. Ritchie evened the score in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run double that one-hopped the wall in right field. Buffalo retook the lead when RF Rafael Lantigua's sacrifice fly scored PR Cam Eden. A wild pitch from RHP Jose Ferrer gave Buffalo its 10th unanswered run and a 10-8 lead.
In his second start with Rochester, Urena (0-1, 9.24) turned in 4.2 innings, allowing six runs and eight hits while striking out five Bisons. Ferrer (2-2, 4.22) was tabbed with the loss, while Buffalo's RHP Hayden Juenger earned the win. Four Wings pitchers combined to give up 13 hits and eight walks while striking out eight batters.
Francisco Arcia has been named the Diamond Pro Player of the Game after he went 2-for-4, driving in one run in the eight hole for Rochester. He advanced Martin, who eventually scored, to second base on his first at-bat of the eight-run fifth inning. Arcia then singled on his second plate appearance of the inning, scoring Martin.
Rochester returns to the field tomorrow for the fourth game in the series against the Bisons. RHP Joan Adon is set to make the start for the Wings, marking his 60th career minor league start. RHP Casey Lawrence is on the bump for the Bisons. First pitch is set for 6:05 pm.
