Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Johnstown, PA - The Johnstown Chiefs fell in a thriller to the Kalamazoo Wings by a score of 5-4 via a shootout on Wednesday night at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial
The Chiefs took advantage of a power play and jumped on the board early in the first period. Trevor Hendrikx blasted a shot top shelf for his fourth goal of the season with Chanse Fitzpatrick and Connor Shields gaining the assists. The goal was registered at 7:24 in the period. The Chiefs continued to assault Kalamazoo goalie Ryan Nie and were able to up their lead deep in the period. Russ Sinkewich moved the puck along in the boards in the corner to Shields who fed it up to Troy Schwab. Schwab sniped the puck in for his 15th goal of the season, and fourth point in the last two games, to put the Chiefs up 2-0 at the 16:15 mark in the first. The Wings were able to snake in a goal just over a minute later at 17:38. Sam Ftorek scored his 14th goal of the season while shorthanded with Tom Morrow and Brian McGuirk registering the assists.
The middle of the second period saw a string of goals that swung in Kalamazoo's favor. The Wings were able to twist another Chiefs power play against the black and gold. This time it was McGuirk scoring the shorthanded goal at 8:59 for his 12th goal of the season with Ftorek picking up the assist. The Chiefs were able to answer back while still on the power play and retake the lead. Chanse Fitzpatrick chipped in a goal for his 25th of the season with Shields gaining the assist at 9:55. The Wings went on to tie the game back up less than a minute later. Mathieu Curadeau beat Kris Mayotte top shelf for his 17th of the season at 10:25. Patrick Asselin and Will Colbert were accredited the assists on the play. The Chiefs peppered the net with a flurry of shots and registered 21 to the Wings' 10 but both teams were tied up at 3-3 to end the period.
Both teams came out with intensity and aggression looking to take control of the game. At 9:53 in the third the Wings got a gift from the Chiefs. Ftorek attempted to center a puck that Mayotte misplayed in the Chiefs zone. The puck wound up bouncing off Brian Kaufman's skate and into the empty net. The goal came in at 9:53 and placed the Wings up 4-3. The Chiefs did not let the goal discourage them. Trevor Hendrikx fired a blistering shot from the high slot at 11:58 that whizzed by Nie. Sinkewich and Shields gained the assists. The assist was Shields' fourth of the game. Both teams duked it out for the rest of the period but the game could not be settled in regulation.
The overtime was almost neck and neck with Chiefs outshooting the Wings 4 to 3 but neither team could generate the game winning goal and the game went into a shootout.
Rick Cleaver of the Wings and Shields were the first shooters and were both denied. Curadeau was able to maneuver a puck by Mayotte for the first shootout goal and Jim McKenzie was unable to answer back. Darryl Lloyed's chance was turned aside and Chiefs' Jordan Morrison was able to put one past Nie to tie the teams up 1-1 after three shooters. Sam Ftorek made a dazzling move and fired one past Mayotte which would end up being the game winner.
Mayotte made 36 saves in the loss. The Chiefs went 3-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
