Trenton's Vokes Named Reebok Hockey ECHL Rookie Of The Month For February

PRINCETON, N.J. - Matt Vokes of the Trenton Devils has been selected as the Reebok Hockey ECHL Rookie of the Month for February.

He was also named the ECHL Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 15-21.

Vokes had 20 points (9g-11a) in 11 games, including three game-winning goals and a plus-minus rating of +6 to help Trenton go 8-3-0. He led rookies during the month in goals, assists, game-winners and plus-minus and was tied for the lead among rookies with three power-play goals and one shorthand goal.

He leads the Devils with 24 assists and a plus-minus rating of +12 and is second on the team with 38 points.

The 24 year old currently has a nine-game point streak (9g-8a) which began on Feb. 12 when he scored a shorthand goal to help the Devils beat Reading 5-3 and has four games with three-or-more points during the streak. He also has an eight-game point streak (4g-10a) on the road since Jan. 27 when he had an assist in Trenton's 2-1 win at Florida.

Vokes set a career high with four goals against Wheeling on Feb. 21 and tied a career high with three assists against Reading on Feb. 5, at Elmira on Feb. 14 and at Johnstown on Feb. 20 and tallied three-or-more points in four of his 11 games during the month.

His four goals on Feb. 21 included a power-play goal and the game winner and it was the first multi-goal game Vokes has recorded in his career and the third time this season he has had four points in one game. He scored four points (1g-3a) in a 5-2 win against Wheeling on Jan. 2 and added four points (1g-3a) against Reading in a 4-1 victory on Feb. 5.

Prior to joining the ECHL, the Auburn, Mass. native played four seasons at Brown University and saw action in 115 games, recording 64 points (28g-36a) and 63 penalty minutes from 2005-09. He also had 90 points (44g-46a) and 58 penalty minutes in 113 regular-season games and 14 points (6g-8a) and 10 penalty minutes in 14 playoff games with Cedar Rapids of the United States Hockey League from 2003-05.

Runners-Up: Nick Mazzolini, Alaska (12 gp, 4g, 12a, 14 pts.) and Tim Miller, Gwinnett (12gp, 7g, 6a, 13pts.).

Also Nominated: Scott Hotham (Florida), Dean Strong (Kalamazoo), Michael Pelech (Ontario), Jake Hauswirth (South Carolina), Maxime Tanguay (Toledo) and Tony Romano (Utah).
