Wilkes-Barre Signs Merth to PTO

The Wheeling Nailers, AA affiliate for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have announced a transaction, effective immediately. Defenseman Peter Merth has been signed to a professional tryout contract by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Merth, 24, is currently playing in his second season of professional hockey, following a four-year collegiate career at R.P.I. During his time at R.P.I., Merth earned three individual honors, being named the team's Most Outstanding Freshman in 2006-07, while also taking home the Best Defensive Player award in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Also, during his junior and senior seasons, he was an alternate captain for the Engineers. Over the course of his four years of college hockey, the New Westminster, BC native scored four goals, 27 assists, and 31 points in 151 games.

Prior to last season, Merth turned pro, joining the Wheeling Nailers. In 69 games as a rookie, the blueliner had one goal, 11 assists, 12 points, and 90 penalty minutes, while posting a plus-5 rating. This season, Peter's strong defensive play has continued, as he joins Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after leading the Nailers with a plus-12 rating. He has also chipped in with two assists, while totaling 11 penalty minutes.

On Saturday night the Nailers will host the Trenton Titans at WesBanco Arena.
