Express Force Overtime, Fall 4-3

Hoffman Estates, IL - The Chicago Express, proud member of the ECHL and proud affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, forced overtime with a late third period goal but eventually fell in extra time 4-3 at Wings Stadium on Saturday night.

For the first time in the three game set, the Express got on the board first. D Scott Lehman rushed the puck into the zone and dished the puck to F Pierre-Luc Faubert for a quick shot on goal. G Riley Gill made the save, but LW Devin DiDiomete tapped the rebound home to put Chicago on top at 11:57. Kalamazoo answered with 2:16 left in the period, when F Nick Sirota settled down a bouncing puck in front of the net and chipped over the shoulder of G Allen York, tying the game at 1-1. The two teams matched each other in the shots on goal department in the frame, ending with a 10-10 total.

LW Chad Painchaud continued to stay hot, increasing his goal-scoring streak to three games. Painchaud feathered a pass to RW Tyler Donati who rang a shot off the post. Painchaud stretched out and tapped the rebound over the goal line, putting the Express up 2-1 at 10:29 of the second stanza. F Mike Embach nearly gave Chicago a two goal lead when he rang a shot off the post late in the period, but the frame ended with Chicago holding a 2-1 lead.

Kalamazoo reversed their fate in the third period, starting with F Dean Strong wristing a shot into the top corner of the net on the power play and tying the game at 2-2 at 11:09 of the final frame. Strong scored again on a rebound 1:02 later to give Kalamazoo a 3-2 lead. C Aaron Marvin forced overtime, however, banging home a rebound from the side of the net with 6:08 to play in regulation.

The Wings started the third period on the power play, and capitalized against the Express. D Sam Ftorek held the puck in at the left point and blasted a slap shot past York to boost Kalamazoo to a 4-3 overtime win.

Notes:

D Brett Motherwell made his Chicago Express debut and earned an assist on Chicago's second goal... RW Chaz Johnson played in his 200th ECHL game... Chicago failed to come away with a victory after scoring the game's first goal for the first time this season, as the Express are now 8-0-1-0 when scoring first.

Chicago is back at the Sears Centre on Wednesday, Dec. 14 and Friday, Dec. 16. The 16th is a Dollar Friday game, featuring one dollar beer and one dollar hot dogs. It also Teddy Bear Toss, so bring a new stuffed animal to game to throw on the ice when the Express score their first goal.
