Elmira Defeats Florida in Annual Teddy Bear Toss Game

ESTERO, FL - Goaltender Brian Stewart made 32 saves to lead the Elmira Jackals to 4-2 victory over the Florida Everblades in front of an announced crowd of 7,180 at Germain Arena on Saturday night.
The largest crowd of the season was energized by the annual Teddy Bear Toss, and it did not take long for the fans to celebrate the Everblades first goal. Justin Shugg picked up rebound in front and flipped a backhanded shot into the net for the goal, sparking a wild celebration of thousands of teddy bears and stuffed animals raining down on the ice. The collected bears will be distributed to children across the region for the holiday season.
After a 15-minute delay to clean the ice, the Jackals responded to tie the game at one just 1:13 later, as Rob Bellamy wristed a shot past Florida goaltender Pat Nagle.
Elmira struck twice in the second period, receiving a goal from Louie Caporusso who shot the puck from a tough angle down low to give Elmira the 2-1 lead. The Jackals extended the lead on a shorthand goal at 19:30 by Matt Campanale, giving his team a 3-1 lead at the end of two.
In the third Elmira continued to press registering a power play goal from a Mario Larocque. Larocque fired a shot that deflected off the skate of David Fischer into the net for the goal.
Florida attempted a late rally as Rylan Galiardi put back a power play goal past Elmira netminder Brian Stewart to put the score at 4-2. However, the goal would not be enough as the Jackals went on to win their seventh game in their last eight contests. Florida outshot Elmira 34-29.
After a six-game homestand, the Everblades will hit the road for a Thursday night matchup against the Gwinnett Gladiators. Florida's next home game is set for December 22 and 23. Fans will have the opportunity to skate with Santa following the December 22 game. Skate rentals will be available.
