Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

WASHINGTON, PA - The Washington Wild Things scored eight unanswered runs, including five runs with two outs in the last of the sixth, to pull away from the Traverse City Beach Bums and win 8-2 on Saturday night at Consol Energy Park.

Traverse City jumped on top in the contest in the second inning thanks to a bases loaded, two-run single from Jake Rhodes. That lead stood until the fourth inning when Washington took advantage of a throwing error to score two unearned runs, knotting the game at two apiece.

The Wild Things took the lead for good in the last of the fifth inning on a C.J. Beatty double to make it 3-2. The big rally, though, came in the sixth inning. With two outs and the bases empty, eight straight batters reached for Washington on six hits and two walks as five runs crossed the plate to push the lead to 8-2.

After a shaky beginning to his outing, Washington starter Shawn Blackwell settled down to not allow a hit to Traverse City after the third inning. Blackwell (9-4) allowed two runs on five hits in five innings to tie for the league lead in wins.

Casey Delgado struck out 10 batters in his outing for Traverse City, but suffered the loss. Delgado (6-4) lasted 5.2 frames, allowing six runs, four earned, on 11 hits. It was the second time this season that Delgado has reached double digits in strikeouts without walking a batter, both coming against Washington.

The Beach Bums and Wild Things will finish up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. Scott Vachon (1-1, 5.24) will start game one for TC against A.J. Holland (0-1, 9.00) while Rusty Shellhorn (4-3, 4.76) will get the ball in game two against a to be determined opponent for Washington. Fans can listen to the broadcast starting at 2:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
