Grizzlies Win Fifth Straight and Roar Back into First Place

SAUGET, Ill. - Gateway starting pitcher Ja'Vaun West fired six scoreless innings and the Grizzlies defeated the Windy City ThunderBolts 4-1 Saturday night at GCS Ballpark in front of 4,702 fans.

The win was the fifth straight for Gateway (44-28) and moved them ahead of River City for first place in the West Division.

West (7-1), making his first start since July 23rd, allowed only two hits with no walks and six strikeouts in his six innings of work. It was his first win since July 2nd.

Gateway scored a run on a Landon Hernandez RBI single in the third inning and three more runs on five hits in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 4-0. Josh Adams drove in a run on a triple, Richard Seigel picked up an RBI single and Tommy Richards recorded a sacrifice fly.

Windy City (25-47) scored their only run of the game on a Kyle Robinson solo home run in the seventh inning.

Brett Zawacki pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Richard Barrett tossed a scoreless ninth inning for his 16th save of the season.

The Grizzlies continue their homestand with game two of a three-game series against the ThunderBolts Sunday night. Right-hander Aaron Newcomb (9-4) will make the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 6:05.
