
Slammers Fall in High-Scoring Game 13-7 on Saturday

The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy-lost to the Southern Illinois Miners 13-7 as a late rally fell short.
Alex Kaminsky struggled as the Joliet starter, allowing four runs through the first three innings. A Niko Vasquez RBI double was the big hit, while Jay Austin tripled and scored on a Matt Jones sacrifice fly. A run also scored on an error and Frank Martinez added a sac fly of his own. The big inning for the Miners was the 4th inning though thanks to a Martinez 3-run homer. Kaminsky was lifted for Tyler Thicke but it was a six-run inning and a 10-1 lead at that point. The lone Joliet run to that point came on a Chris Epps 3rd inning sacrifice fly off of Michael Carden. The Slammers kept on the pressure with two more runs in the 4th and another in the 5th to make the score 10-4. Russell Moldenhauer scored on a wild pitch and Adam Giacalone added a RBI single in the 4th and Moldenhauer's RBI grounder scored a run in the 5th. Aaron Gates hit a solo homer to right for Southern Illinois in the 6th and the score became 11-4. It moved to 11-6 on a throwing error by Steve Marino as Max Casper and JD Dorgan scored on the play. A Grant DeBruin RBI grounder off reliever Britt Robertshaw pushed the score to 11-7 in the 6th. The Miners closed out the scoring in the 8th with a 2-run double from Austin as the game ended 13-7.
Before the bottom of the 8th inning, the Slammers gave away $750 to lucky fan, Ryan Cross, as part of their Amazing August promotion. Each home game in August will see one fan go home with at least $250 dollars. The higher that night's attendance, the higher the payout will be. The payout on Friday, August 1st to a lucky winner was $5000.
The Slammers six-game home stand continues with Sunday's 1:05pm start. It with be a Family Sunday where kids 12-and-under eat free and have the opportunity to run the bases after the game and get autographs from all the players. That will be followed by a Military Monday start of 7:05pm where all past and present members of the Military get in free. Slammers action this summer is broadcast live on 1340 WJOL and wjol.com.
