Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners used a strong early offensive push, scoring 10 runs in the first four innings, to earn a 13-7 win over the Slammers at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, their first win at Joliet in four tries this season and their fifth win in a row overall.

An RBI single by Aaron Gates in the first inning gave the Miners the immediate 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard and Matt Jones' sac fly after Jay Austin's leadoff triple in the second doubled the lead to 2-0. Two more runs scored in the third inning as former Slammer Niko Vasquez doubled home Ryan Cavan and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.

It was 4-1 in the fourth when the Miners put together a six-run inning. After a flyout opened the inning, Jon Eisen walked and Cavan singled to set up another RBI hit, this time a single, by Vasquez. The next pitch Joliet starter Alex Kaminsky (0-2) threw was sent over the right field fence by Frank Martinez for a three-run blast. After another flyout for the second out of the inning, Chris Burke walked and Austin doubled before Steve Marino lined a two-run single into center field to make it 10-1.

Joliet would rally back, scoring runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to draw within 11-7 with three in the sixth following a solo homer by Gates in the top of the frame. The Slammers loaded the bases with two outs in the inning, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Britt Robertshaw got Adam Giacalone to fly out to end the inning.

Southern Illinois would then tack on insurance in the eighth, when Austin hit a two-out, two-run single of his own for the final margin. Michael Carden (4-3) pitched 5 1/3 innings to get his third win in four starts, with the Miners winning in a game he started for the seventh time in a row. Offensively, the team had 16 hits total. Five different players had multiple hits led by Austin's 3-for-5 game, with five players also getting multiple RBIs in the contest and five players also scoring more than one run.

The Miners will take on the Slammers again in a matinee on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Jack McGeary will get the ball for the Miners against Joliet's Ethan Carter.
