Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Mavericks looked to win their 12th consecutive game against the Wichita Thunder Saturday night at Independence Events Center. The game proved to be a thriller as Wichita scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals with just seconds remaining in the third period and overtime periods respectively. The Thunder collected their first ever win against Missouri, beating the Mavericks 4-3 in overtime. The game marked the third time this season the Mavericks have lost a game while leading in the third period.
Ryan Jardine got things started early for the Mavericks with an unassisted goal on a slap shot from the top of the left circle just 3:27 into the game. The goal was the fastest goal from the opening faceoff by the Mavericks this season. Wichita responded nine minutes later when Mike Looby netted a power play goal. Assists on the goal went to Jesse Bennefield and Aaron Davis. Wichita continued their assault on the Mavs defensive corps five minutes later as Andrew Martens notched yet another power play goal for the Thunder. Looby recorded his second point of the night with an assist on the goal. Bennefield was also credited with a helper on the goal.
The second period went on without action. Both goaltenders were spectacular during the period, as Rob Nolan stopped 12 shots for Missouri and Marty Magers went a perfect 10 for 10 against Mavericks' scoring tries. Walker Wintoneak dazzled the crowd late in the period with a perfectly executed toe-drag deke. After splitting the defense, Wintoneak slid the puck underneath Magers diving body, but the puck squirted just wide of the net. The game remained 2-1 in Wichita's favor as the second period wound down, but Chris Greene took a boarding major with just 2:45 remaining in the period, giving the Mavericks the power play entering the final frame.
Just 27 seconds into the third period, Mike Berry took advantage of the Mavericks' power play, sending a pass from Toby Lafrance into the back of the net, tying the game at 2-2. Ray DiLauro recorded his first assist of the season on the Berry goal. Berry now leads the Mavericks with three power play goals this season. Roughly 10 minutes later, the Mavericks regained the lead when Wintoneak put on another fancy display of puckhandling and sent a pass to a waiting Nick Sirota who in turn punched the puck in for a goal. The Mavericks led the game until late in the period. Wichita had pulled Magers in favor of an extra attacker. The gamble paid off as the Thunder tied the game with just 16 seconds left in regulation.
The game went on to overtime and all signs were pointing to a shootout as both teams took a conservative approach, combining for just three shots in the extra session. Wichita mounted an odd-man rush with just seconds to play. Troy Schwab shot a pass across the slot which appeared to hit Andrew Martens in the lower part of his body and bounced into the net for the game winning score. The officials determined that Martens had not made a kicking motion and the goal was upheld.
Nolan ended the game with 27 saves on 31 shots. Magers held his own with 23 saves on 26 shots. The Mavericks have now scored a power play goal in six consecutive games. The Mavericks went one-for-four on the power play. The Thunder had success with their special teams, going two-for-eight on the power play.
Missouri will return to action next Thursday as they hit the road to take on the Quad City Mallards in Moline, Illinois. Then they travel to Wichita to take on the Thunder once again. The Mavericks will make their return to Independence on Saturday, November 13, when they face the Fort Wayne Komets at 7:05 p.m. at Independence Events Center. Tickets for all remaining regular season home games are on sale now starting at just $14 per game.
