Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks looked to change their losing ways Friday night at Independence Events Center as they took on the Tulsa Oilers. The game was delayed for over an hour as the Oilers team bus caught on fire earlier in the day while they were making the drive to Independence. The Mavericks posted their highest shot total of the season as they defeated the Oilers, 4-2.

The Oilers were the first to strike as Harrison Reed put the Oilers out in front just five minutes into the game. Chad Costello and John Mori were credited with assists on Reed's goal. Ten minutes later in the period the Mavericks drew even with Tulsa as defenseman Dominic D'Amour ripped home a wrist shot from the point, tying the game at 1-1. With the goal, the Mavericks have now scored a power play goal in five consecutive games. The period wrapped up with both teams deadlocked at one goal each. Tulsa goaltender Tyler Sims recorded 13 saves on 14 shots in the period.

The second period opened up in a similar fashion to the first, but this time it was the Mavericks lighting up the scoreboard early. Former NHL player Ryan Jardine, gained control of a loose puck in the crease and shoveled it in to give the Mavericks a 2-1 advantage over the Oilers. The similarities between periods one and two continued as the Mavericks notched another tally with just over five minutes to go in the period. Mike Berry scored on a one timer from Cole Ruwe. Dominic D'Amour also recorded his second point of the night with an assist on the Berry tally. Tulsa hastily responed with a goal of their own just two minutes later as Harrison Reed got his second mark of the night. Chad Costello was credited with his second assist of the night as well. Gerry Festa stood tall in net, making 11 saves on 12 shots.

Most of the third period went on without incident until the 17:31 mark when Mavs forward Toby Lafrance was hauled down on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. Lafrance capitalized on the opportunity, putting the Mavericks up 4-2. The Mavericks held the fort for the remainder of the game as Mavericks goaltender Gerry Festa continued his white hot start, stopping 27 of 29 shots, including 10 of 10 in the third period. The Mavericks' 36 shots were a season high. Their 16 shots in the second period were a season high as well for shots in a single period.

The Mavericks ended up going one-for-five on the power play. The Oilers had little luck with their special teams units as well, going zero-for-five on the power play. Toby Lafrance's penalty shot was the Mavericks' second penalty shot this year.

The Mavericks wrap up their four-game homestand tomorrow night, as they take on the Wichita Thunder at 7:05pm. Tickets for all remaining regular season home games are on sale now starting at just $14 per game. Mini-plans, season tickets and group tickets are also available by calling (816) 252-7825 or visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
