Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS- Despite being shorthanded for much of Friday night's affair with the Texas Brahmas (14-10-6), Wichita (19-8-1) got a two-goal outing from Matt Summers and held on for a 4-3 victory at INTRUST Bank Arena in front of 6,217. The win coupled with an Allen overtime loss moves Wichita into first place in the Berry Conference with 39 points.
Texas got on the board first at 4:24 of the first period when Adam Hogg caught a pass on the far side of the net and beat Wichita netminder Adam Russo to give the Brahmas a 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later, Matt Summers (8) answered for Wichita when he won a face-off and snapped it past Brahmas goalie Mark Guggenberger to tie the game at one. Alex Bourret, who was named to the All-Star team this past Wednesday, received 27 minutes in penalties after instigating a fight with Dan Nicholls right before the end of the first period. With Andrew Martens already out of the line-up down in Oklahoma City of the AHL, Bourret was lost for the rest of the game.
Brett Hemingway (11) scored his second in two games as he stayed with a rebound and gave Wichita a 2-1 lead at 3:36 of the second period. The Brahmas answered off a face-off at 9:48 as Erik Spady tied the game at two. Three minutes later, Chris Chappell (2) gave the Thunder a 3-2 lead when he skated in behind the net and wrapped it past Guggenberger for his second in two games.
In the third, Matt Summers (9) added his second of the contest when he collected a fumbled pass at the Brahmas blue line and roofed it under the cross bar to increase the Thunder lead to 4-2. Daniel Tetrault was awarded an assist on the goal, which puts him in first-place for scoring by a defenseman in Wichita Thunder history with 170 points. Chad Woollard added a late goal for Texas, but Wichita held on for a 4-3 win. Wichita is now 14-3 on home-ice and leads the league with 19 wins.
Wichita is on the road the next two games before returning home on Saturday, January 7th against Tulsa. The Thunder heads to Evansville tomorrow night to face the IceMen on New Year's Eve.
