Kansas City Mavericks News Release
BLOOMINGTON, Illinois - Charlie Effinger stopped all 28 shots faced and the Missouri Mavericks shut out the Bloomington Blaze, 3-0, Friday night at US Cellular Coliseum. Dale Mahovsky had a goal and an assist, and John-Scott Dickson added a pair of assists as the Mavericks ended a two-game losing streak. Missouri shut out their opponent for the first time this season and the team will head home for a game against the Texas Brahmas on New Year's Eve at Independence Events Center.
"That was a good step forward," said Mavericks' head coach Scott Hillman. "Last night, I thought was one of our best games of the season, but we didn't get the result. Tonight was a solid road effort."
Steven Kaunisto gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead at 7:17 of the first period when he skated into the Bloomington zone on a two-on-one and lifted a wrist shot over the shoulder of Blaze goaltender Zane Kalemba. Dickson earned the lone assist on the goal and it proved to be all the offense the Mavericks would need all night. But Missouri extended their lead with 3:48 remaining in the opening period when Sebastien Thinel netted his eighth goal of the season on assists from Mahovsky and Dickson.
The Mavericks put up 27 shots through the first two periods and Effinger and the Mavericks' defense didn't allow the Blaze to score on their 22 shots.
In the third period, the Mavericks limited the Blaze to just six shots on goal and Effinger was equal to the task on every shot. Kalemba was pulled from Bloomington's net in favor of the extra attacker and the Mavericks' sealed the victory with an empty net goal. Mahovsky scored his 12th goal of the season into the empty net on assists from Andrew Courtney and Brad Good.
Missouri recorded their first shut out win since March 22, 2010 when they blanked the Mississippi RiverKings 7-0. The Mavericks finished 0-for-2 on the power play, and for the first time this season, the Mavericks went the entire game without being penalized.
Missouri will return home on Saturday night, New Year's Eve to take on the Texas Brahmas at Independence Events Center. Tickets for all regular season games are on sale via Ticketmaster. Call (816) 252-7825 for more information or visit www.MissouriMavericks.com .
