Bloomington Blaze News Release
BLOOMINGTON - The Bloomington Blaze, presented by Mid-Illini Credit Union, dropped only their second home game in seven tries in December with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Missouri Mavericks on Friday evening at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
The Mavericks dodged several Blaze opportunities in the first few minutes of the game, but scored on their first shot when Steve Kaunisto converted a two-on-one breakaway with 12:43 remaining in the period. Sebastien Thinel made it 2-0 for the Kansas City-area squad with 3:48 remaining in the opening period.
Neither team broke onto the scoreboard until Dale Mahovsky poked the puck into an empty net with 1:12 left in the game.
Mavericks goaltender Charlie Effinger earned the shutout with 28 saves. Blaze goalie Zane Kalemba took the loss with 30 stops. Missouri was 0-2 on the power play, while the Blaze did not receive a man-advantage. The Mavericks pick up their league-best tenth road win to improve to 13-12-3 while the Blaze fall to 9-17-2.
The Blaze travel to Fort Wayne on Saturday for the Komets' 55th New Year's Eve game at 6:30 p.m. Central. The game can be heard on WJBC.com and CHL-TV. The Blaze play three times at home next week, on Tuesday against Fort Wayne and on Friday and Saturday against Evansville. Face-off is at 7:05 p.m. for all three contests. Tuesday is a Two For Tuesday, featuring two bowl tickets for $14 and $2 Pepsi products, hot dogs and popcorn all night.
