Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
WICHITA, Kansas (December 30) - The Brahmas traveled to Wichita Friday night to take on the Thunder, but were unable to come away with a win as Matt Summers scored twice on All-Star netminder Mark Guggenberger.
The Brahmas got out in front early in the first period as Adam Hogg beat Wichita goaltender Adam Russo off of a crossing feed from Alex Curran at the 4:34 mark. The Brahmas' only lead of the game lasted just a minute and ten seconds as Matt Summers pulled the Thunder even on the forward's eighth goal of the season.
Brett Hemmingway gave Wichita a 2-1 advantage just three and a half minutes into the second period, but Erik Spady fired a slapshot from the point by Russo to tie the score at two apiece midway through the middle frame. The rookie defenseman, who scored his first professional goal on Wednesday versus Laredo, has now found the back of the net in his last two games.
Before the end of the second period, Chris Chappell beat Guggenberger on a wraparound goal from behind the Brahmas' net to give the Thunder a 3-2 lead heading into the second intermission.
Wichita extended its lead to 4-2 at the 6:37 mark of the third period when Summers scored his second goal of the game and ninth of the season. With only 1:11 remaining, Brahmas all-time leading scorer Chad Woollard beat Russo to cut the deficit in half and keep Texas' hopes alive, but Russo and the Wichita defense held on long enough to come away with the victory.
Wichita's leading scorer Alex Bourret was given a fighting aggressor game misconduct penalty that forced him to sit the final 42:15 of the game, and All-Star defenseman Andrew Martens was called up by the AHL earlier in the week, but the Thunder were still able to find a way to win.
Mark Guggenberger - who was selected to the 2012 All-Star Team on Thursday - struggled on Friday night, stopping only 18 of 22 shots on goal.
The Brahmas play again on Saturday night as they make the trip to Missouri to face off against the Mavericks. The team returns to the NYTEX Sports Centre on Sunday, January 15 when they take on the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at 5:00pm.
