All-Stars Shine with Schultz' Playing Hero as Rush Comeback for Overtime Victory
December 30, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - A sold out crowd at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center witnessed a 3-2 overtime win by the Rapid City Rush against Tulsa Oilers on Friday night. All-Stars Jesse Schultz and Riley Weselowski both found the net for the Rush who stormed back from a two-goal deficit. Current league points leader and All-Star starter, Jesse Schultz, potted the overtime game-winner to cap the come-from-behind victory. The teams hit the ice again tomorrow in a New Year's celebration at the RPCC and limited tickets are still available by calling 716-PUCK (7825) or online at gotmine.com.
The opening period featured numerous scoring chances for both teams, but the best opportunity went to Oilers forward Michel Beausoleil who was awarded a penalty shot with just two seconds remaining. Beausoleil, already with seven goals this season, was denied by Rush goaltender Danny Battochio who was able to stop the veteran's backhand attempt.
The scoreless tie was broken at the 11:06 mark of the second when rookie David Solway capped off a flurry of chances by sliding a rebound underneath Battochio for his eighth goal of the season. Just over two minutes later, Marty Standish had a clean breakaway and snapped a shot five-hole, doubling the lead. The Rush finally answered back and cut the lead in half with a powerplay goal from Riley Weselowski with just twenty-six seconds remaining in the period. The defenseman fired a slapshot from the center blue line through a screen and in for his sixth goal of the year, setting a new career high for the fourth-year pro.
The Rush scored the equalizer 3:39 into the third period when Carl Hudson's shot squeaked through Oilers goaltender Mike Garman and Konrad Reeder was there to bank home the powerplay tally.
With just 1:02 left in the overtime period, Mike Vaskivuo displayed his playmaking abilities by stickhandling past numerous defenders before sliding a pass back door pass to Jesse Schultz for the game-winner.
