Killer Bees Start Road Trip with 5-4 Shootout Victory

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz.- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (12-12-4) needed a shootout but defeated the Arizona Sundogs (9-15-5) by a 5-4 score on Friday night. The Bees received goals from newcomers Craig Lineker and Philip Ischi. In addition Zac Pearson and Aaron Boogaard scored en route to the victory.

The Killer Bees started the scoring just 47 seconds into the first period as newcomer Craig Lineker scored on his first touch of the puck wearing the Killer Bees sweater. Lineker floated one from the point that beat Arizona goalie Scott Reid. Zac Pearson and Jason Dixon earned the assists.

Arizona would battle right back as Adam Smyth scored at the 1:27 mark of the first period after breaking free in front. Jeff Hazelwood and JP Chabot earned the helpers.

Zac Pearson would give the Bees the lead back at 3:21 of the first period as he backhanded a shot past Reid in his first game back in a Bees jersey since an injury. Dixon earned his second assist of the night and Aaron Lee also earned a helper.

Arizona tied the game at two at the 8:20 mark with a power-play goal by Chabot. After Bees goalie Wylie Rogers made a number of saves in front but the loose puck finally squirted to Chabot who buried it.

The second period would pass with neither team able to take the lead as both goalies stopped all the pucks thrown their way.

Arizona scored their second power-play goal of the game in the third period to take their first lead of the game as Luke Erikson found the back of the net on a shot that Rogers got a piece of.

Philip Ischi scored in his first game in a Killer Bees uniform to tie the game at three with a strike at 8:47 of the third. The Bees then retook the lead at 13:29 of the third as Aaron Boogaard scored his second of the season.

Arizona scored their third power-play goal of the evening at 16:40 to tie the game at four goals apiece as Luke Erickson scored his second of the game.

The two teams would head to overtime with neither team able to gaining an advantage.

In the shootout Zac Pearson, Dan Gendur and Tomas Klempa all scored to give the Bees a 3-2 shootout victory and a 5-4 victory in the hockey game. Klempa was credited with the game winning goal.

The Killer Bees return to action tomorrow night against the Arizona Sundogs. Puck drops at 8:05 p.m. and fans can follow the game on 956sports.com and CHL-TV.
